RANGERS, PENGUINS NARROW GAP IN METROPOLITAN
Both the Rangers and Penguins won on Sunday to inch closer to the Islanders – who lost in regulation – for first place in the Metropolitan Division:

* The Blue Jackets erased a 3-0 deficit, but Rick Nash scored in the third round of the shootout to lift the Rangers past his former club. New York extended its point streak to eight games (6-0-2), matching a season high set Dec. 8-27 (8-0-0).

* Martin St. Louis (2-0—2) notched his second multi-goal game of the season (other Nov. 3 vs. STL: 2-0—2) and also found the back of the net in the tiebreaker. He has 4-3—7 in his past five contests.

* The Rangers have earned at least one point in 17 of their last 19 games versus intradivision opponents (16-2-1). They also have collected points eight of their past 11 meetings with the Blue Jackets dating to Oct. 24, 2008 (7-3-1).

* Patric Hornqvist and Evgeni Malkin both posted 2-1—3 to power the Penguins to their second win in as many days. Hornqvist matched a career high for points in one game, last achieved Nov. 8 at BUF (2-1—3), while Malkin recorded his fourth such performance of the season.

* Sidney Crosby registered two assists; his average of 1.09 points per game ranks first in the NHL this season (19-42—61 in 56 GP). Marc-Andre Fleury made 34 saves to pick up his 27th victory.

* The Penguins improved to 15-2-3 against the Atlantic Division this season, including points in five straight games (4-0-1). They also improved to 10-1-0 in their last 11 home meetings with the Panthers dating to March 10, 2009.

SIX-GOAL THIRD PERIOD POWERS WILD
Trailing 1-0 after 40 minutes, the Wild scored a franchise-record six goals in the third period to earn their third consecutive victory.

* At 31-21-7 (69 points), the Wild leapfrogged the idle Flames (32-23-4, 68 points) for the final Wild Card spot in the Western Conference, where four teams are separated by three points:

* The Wild’s six third-period goals set a franchise record for any period. The previous mark of five was established on Oct. 19, 2005 vs. SJS (3rd period of 6-1 W).

* Mikael Granlund (1-2—3) registered his second career three-point game (other Jan. 30, 2014 at COL: 1-2—3). Christian Folin added two assists for his first career multi-point performance.

* Zach Parise (2-0—2) notched his 39th career multi-goal game. He leads the club with 25 goals and 46 points this season, including 11-5—16 in his past 17 outings.

* At 26-23-11 (63 points), the Avalanche remained within six points of the Wild (31-21-7, 69 points) for the final Wild Card spot in the Western Conference.

* At 19 years, 174 days, Elias says MacKinnon became the second-youngest player in Avalanche/Nordiques history to post a hat trick. Joe Sakic notched two such games before that age – on Oct. 22, 1988 at NYI (19 years, 107 days) and on Nov. 24, 1988 vs. MTL (19 years, 140 days).

* Per Elias, only two other players have registered a hat trick at age 19 for the Avalanche/Nordiques franchise: Mats Sundin (in 1990-91) and Owen Nolan (2x in 1991-92).

* Gabriel Landeskog collected his 100th NHL assist to extend his point streak to six games (5-2—7). Ryan O’Reilly added a pair of helpers.

* Making his 16th consecutive start, Semyon Varlamov denied 28 shots to pick up his 18th win of the season.

BRUINS SNAP SKID TO CREATE BREATHING ROOM . . .
Ahead 2-1 after 20 minutes, the Bruins added four consecutive goals in the second period to defeat the Blackhawks and snap a six-game skid (0-4-2).

* At 29-21-9 (67 points), the Bruins moved three points ahead of the Panthers (26-21-12, 64 points) – who lost in regulation – for the final Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference.

* Patrice Bergeron posted 1-2—3, including his 200th NHL goal, for his third three-point performance of the season (also Nov. 10 vs. NJD: 1-2—3 and Dec. 23 vs. NSH: 0-3—3).

* Elias says Bergeron became the 17th player in Bruins history to score 200 or more goals for the club. The only other NHL teams with as many 200-goal scorers are the Canadiens (22) and Blackhawks (20).

* Dougie Hamilton and Reilly Smith both notched 1-1—2. Gregory Campbell, Loui Eriksson and Milan Lucic recorded the other goals.

* The Bruins improved to 4-0-3 in their past seven regular-season visits to United Center dating to Feb. 14, 2004.

. . . FLYERS KEEP PACE IN PLAYOFF PUSH
The Capitals erased a 2-0 deficit, but Michael Del Zotto scored the tiebreaking goal with 4:13 remaining in regulation to lift the Flyers to their second straight win and an 8-1-4 mark in their past 13 outings.

* At 26-23-11 (63 points), the Flyers remained four points behind the Bruins (29-21-9, 67 points) – who also won – for the final Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference:

* Del Zotto has seven goals in 48 appearances this season, surpassing his total from his prior two campaigns combined (6 G in 113 GP). His three game-winning goals in 2014-15 also are double his career total from the start of the season (317 GP).

* Wayne Simmonds found the back of the net to extend his point streak to a career-high eight games (6-4—10). He paces the club with 24 goals and 13 via the power play.

* Rob Zepp made 21 saves to improve to 5-1-0 in eight career appearances (2.63 GAA, .894 SV%).

CANUCKS CONTINUE DOMINANCE OF METROPOLITAN FOES
Ryan Miller (10 saves) and Eddie Lack (27 saves) combined to stop all 37 shots they faced and lead the Canucks to their fifth win in their past seven starts.

* At 34-22-3 (71 points), the Canucks moved three points ahead of the idle Kings (28-18-12, 68 points) for second place in the Pacific Division.

* The Canucks improved to 12-2-0 versus the Metropolitan Division this season, including a sweep of their two-game set with the Islanders. No other Western Conference team has more than nine wins against Metropolitan opponents.

* Lack entered the net after Miller suffered an injury early in the second period. Via Elias, Lack’s 27 saves were the most in a relief effort without allowing a goal in Canucks history. Arturs Irbe previously held the mark, stopping all 22 shots he faced in relief of Kirk McLean en route to 4-2 win on Nov. 29, 1997 at TOR.

* Henrik Sedin posted two assists to pick up his fourth consecutive multi-point game (3-5—8). Elias says he is the first Canucks player to record four straight multi-point performances since Mikael Samuelsson Feb. 1-7, 2011 (4-5—9). Sedin also has accomplished that feat two previous times: Dec. 2-12, 2009 (0-13—13 in 6 GP) and Dec. 31, 2009 – Jan. 7, 2010 (2-8—10 in 4 GP).

* Radim Vrbata (1-1—2) added a multi-point game. Bo Horvat, Zack Kassian and Yannick Weber supplied the other goals.

PREDATORS RALLY TO EDGE SABRES IN SHOOTOUT

* At 40-13-7 (87 points), the Predators moved six points ahead of the idle Canadiens (38-16-5, 81 points) and Ducks (37-16-7, 81 points) for first place in the NHL standings.

* The Predators became the first team to reach the 40-win milestone this season. Elias says they hit the mark at the fastest rate in franchise history (60 GP), besting their previous record of 61 games in 2006-07 (40-18-3, 83 points).

* Forsberg improved to 3-for-7 (42.9%) in shootouts this season. All three of his goals have been decisive markers (also Nov. 22 vs. FLA and Feb. 8 at FLA).
