PERREAULT NETS FOUR GOALS TO POWER JETS
Mathieu Perreault (4-0—4) recorded his first career four-goal game and second career hat trick (also Jan. 24, 2012 vs. BOS) to help the Jets extend their point streak to three contests (2-0-1).

* At 22-14-8 (52 points), the Jets moved three points ahead of the Canucks (23-15-3, 49 points) – who lost on Tuesday – for the first Wild Card spot in the Western Conference.

* Perreault became the second NHL player to post a four-goal game in the past week, joining Blues forward David Backes (Jan. 6 at ARI: 4-0—4).

* Via Elias, Perreault became the third player in Jets/Thrashers history to register a four-goal game, joining Pascal Rheaume (Jan. 19, 2002 at FLA: 4-1—5) and Ilya Kovalchuk (Nov. 11, 2005 vs. TBL: 4-0—4).

* After notching just 2-4—6 in his first 24 appearances of the season, Perreault has registered 13-9—22 in his last 19 outings dating to Dec. 3. That includes 6-2—8 during a four-game point streak.

* Elias also says that Perreault leads the NHL with 15 goals in 24 contests since Nov. 18.

* Dustin Byfuglien (2-1—3) posted his first multi-goal and three-point game since March 16, 2014 vs. DAL (2-1—3). He has 2-4—6 in his past three outings and shares eighth among defensemen with 11-17—28 in 44 appearances this season.

* The Jets scored eight goals in one game for the first time since Oct. 27, 2011, when they posted a 9-8 victory at PHI.

* Head coach Paul Maurice earned his 500th NHL win (500-499-164), becoming the seventh active coach (and 20th overall) to reach the milestone. At 47 years, 11 months, Sportsnet says Maurice is the second-youngest coach in NHL history to achieve 500 wins (behind Scotty Bowman: 45 years, 3 months).

HALAK, ISLANDERS COOL OFF RANGERS . . .
Jaroslav Halak stopped all 27 shots he faced to record his 34th career shutout (fourth this season) and lead the Islanders past the Rangers in the second edition of the Battle of New York.

* At 29-13-1 (59 points), the Islanders leapfrogged the Lightning (27-14-4, 58 points) – who lost on Tuesday – for first place in the Eastern Conference. They also tied a franchise record for the most wins through the first 43 games of one season, established in 1978-79 (29-5-9).

* The Islanders earned their second all-time shutout at Madison Square Garden (regular season or playoffs). The other was on Dec. 17, 1975, when Billy Smith guided the club to a 3-0 victory.

* Halak also became the fifth goaltender in Islanders history to post a shutout against the Rangers (home or away), joining Smith, Mark Fitzpatrick (Dec. 9, 1989), Tommy Soderstrom (March 23, 1995) and Rick DiPietro (Dec. 26, 2006).

* Halak picked up his 23rd win of the season, moving into a tie for second place in the NHL with Frederik Andersen. He has a 2.22 goals-against average and .917 save percentage in 31 appearances.

* Anders Lee, Nikolay Kulemin and Frans Nielsen all found the back of the net. Lee potted his fifth game-winning goal of the season, tied for second in the NHL, while Nielsen scored the team’s seventh shorthanded tally of 2014-15 – tops in the League.

* The Islanders completed their seven-game road trip with a 5-2-0 record. Elias says it marked the 44th road trip in franchise history of at least five games, but the first one in which the team picked up five or more wins.

. . . PENGUINS KEEP PACE IN METROPOLITAN DIVISION
David Perron (2-1—3) and Sidney Crosby (0-3—3) both collected three points to propel the Penguins to their second straight win and fourth victory in their past six outings (4-1-1).

* At 26-10-6 (58 points), the Penguins kept pace with the Islanders (29-13-1, 59 points) for the top spot in the Metropolitan Division and Eastern Conference. Pittsburgh holds one game in hand and also owns the ROW tiebreaker (PIT: 24, NYI: 23).

* Crosby notched three assists for the fourth time this season and for the second time in his past five outings (also Jan. 2 vs. TBL: 0-4—4). He is tied for first in the NHL with 35 helpers and shares fifth overall with 47 points in 39 games.

* At 27-13-3 (57 points), the Blues moved within one point of the idle Blackhawks (28-13-2, 58 points) for second place in the Central Division. They also remained five points behind the Predators (29-9-4, 62 points) for the top spot in the division.

* Backes posted his fourth straight multi-point game, totaling 6-4—10 in that span. He is the second Blues player to accomplish that feat this season; Alexander Steen also notched four consecutive multi-point games Jan. 2-8 (3-7—10).
