PANTHERS OUTLAST CAPITALS IN RECORD-SETTING SHOOTOUT
Nick Bjugstad scored in the 20th round of the tiebreaker to lead the Panthers past the Capitals in the longest shootout in NHL history.

* The longest previous shootout in League history was on Nov. 26, 2005, when the Rangers defeated the Capitals in 15 rounds on the strength of a Marek Malik goal.

* Several other records also were set in addition to this being the longest shootout in NHL history:

Most Combined Goals in a Shootout: 11 (FLA: 6, WSH: 5)
Most Goals by One Team in a Shootout: 6 (FLA)
Most Saves by One Goaltender in a Shootout: 15 (Roberto Luongo, FLA)

* Four players made two shootout attempts, the first time a tiebreaker has required repeat shooters (Bjugstad, Jussi Jokinen, Alex Ovechkin, Nicklas Backstrom).

* The Panthers scored five times to avoid losing in the tiebreaker – in the fourth round (Jokinen), seventh round (Dave Bolland), 10th round (Derek MacKenzie), 11th round (Sean Bergenheim) and 17th round (Dylan Olsen).

* “I’ve never seen anything like that,”  said Luongo. “The great thing is I don’t know how many times guys bailed me out where they had to score to keep it alive and they did every time. It was amazing. It’s not the way we draw it up, to go 20 rounds here, but obviously it’s a big win.”

* The Panthers improved to 6-2-2 in their last 10 games. They also earned just their second win in their last 12 meetings with the Capitals dating to Feb. 7, 2012 (2-7-3).

BOBROVSKY LEADS BLUE JACKETS TO SEVENTH STRAIGHT WIN . . .
Sergei Bobrovsky made 30 saves – and then denied two more attempts in the shootout – to record his 10th career shutout (first this season) and backstop the Blue Jackets to their seventh consecutive victory, one shy of the franchise record set Jan. 6-23, 2014 (8-0-0).

* The Blue Jackets, who ranked last in the NHL with 14 points prior to their streak, now sit six points shy of a playoff berth in the Eastern Conference (13-15-2, 28 points).

* Each of the past four victories by the Blue Jackets has come in extra time (2 in OT, 2 in SO). Elias says they are just the fifth team in NHL history to win four consecutive games in one season, all decided after the 60th minute. The others: the 2005-06 Stars, 2008-09 Maple Leafs, 2010-11 Penguins and 2011-12 Penguins. No team has ever won five straight games in that fashion.

* Bobrovsky has been in net for all seven games during the current winning streak, posting a 1.63 goals-against average and .950 save percentage in that span. He has earned 12 of the club’s 13 total victories this season; the team’s other goaltenders are a combined 1-7-1.

* Boone Jenner scored the decisive marker in the third round of the tiebreaker, his first career shootout goal (1-for-2, 50.0%).

* The Blue Jackets improved to 8-2-1 in their last 11 meetings with the Red Wings dating to March 28, 2012.

. . . MAPLE LEAFS MAKE IT SIX IN A ROW
The line of Phil Kessel (2-1—3), Tyler Bozak (1-1—2) and James van Riemsdyk (0-2—2) combined for 3-4—7 to lead the Maple Leafs to their sixth consecutive victory, their longest winning streak since Jan. 12-21, 2014 (6-0-0).

* The Maple Leafs improved to 14-7-0 this season at Air Canada Centre, including five straight victories and nine wins in their last 10 such outings. They lead the NHL in home wins (14) and points (28).

* Kessel paces the Maple Leafs and shares eighth in the NHL with 17-17—34 in 31 games this season. He also extended his point streak to five contests (4-3—7) and now has 6-6—12 in seven career games against the Ducks.

* van Riemsdyk stretched his point streak to five games (3-4—7), one shy of his career long set earlier this season (Nov. 1-12: 3-5—8).

* Jonathan Bernier made 40 saves, including 17 in the first period, to pick up his fourth straight victory. He also improved to 8-1-1 in his last 10 appearances and 5-1-1 in seven career games against the Ducks.

* The Maple Leafs recorded their sixth consecutive victory over the Ducks dating to Oct. 26, 2009.

HAT TRICKS POWER BLUES, CANADIENS
Blues forward Vladimir Tarasenko (3-1—4) and Canadiens forward Alex Galchenyuk (3-0—3) both recorded hat tricks on Tuesday to power their clubs to victories:

* Down 2-0 midway through the second period, the Blues scored five unanswered goals – highlighted by 3-1—4 from Tarasenko – to pick up their fifth straight win. Tarasenko posted his second hat trick of the season, following 3-1—4 Oct. 28 at DAL (including the GWG in both contests). He leads the Blues and ranks fourth in the NHL with 20-16—36 in 31 outings, including 6-4—10 during a six-game point streak.

* Tarasenko is the first Blues player to tally multiple hat tricks in one season since 1996-97, when Brett Hull also had two such games (against the same opponents). Elias also says he is the first Blues player to record multiple hat tricks before Christmas since 1991-92, when Hull had four before Dec. 25. Only two other players have multiple hat tricks this season: Anaheim’s Corey Perry and Dallas’ Tyler Seguin, both with two.

* The Blues registered their fourth consecutive home win and improved to 7-0-1 in their last eight contests at Scottrade Center.

* Galchenyuk notched his first career hat trick (and first career multi-goal performance), including the game-winning marker, to power the Canadiens to their third straight victory. At age 20, Elias says Galchenyuk is only the fourth player in Canadiens history to post a hat trick before his 21st birthday. The others: Bernie Geoffrion (at age 20 in 1951-52), Guy Lafleur (3x, at age 20 in 1971-72) and Stephane Richer (at age 19 in 1985-86).

* Max Pacioretty established a career high with three assists. Carey Price made 25 saves to improve to 11-5-2 with a 2.27 goals-against average, .929 save percentage and two shutouts in 18 career appearances against the Hurricanes.

* The Canadiens improved to 6-0-2 in their last eight meetings with the Hurricanes dating to April 5, 2012, including three straight wins.

BLACKHAWKS EDGE WILD IN PLAYOFF REMATCH . . .
Facing each other for the first time since the Second Round of the 2014 Stanley Cup Playoffs, Patrick Kane scored the tiebreaking goal with 3:28 remaining in regulation to lift the Blackhawks over the Wild.

* Kane also recorded the game-winning goal in the last meeting between these clubs – in overtime of Game 6 to propel the Blackhawks to the 2014 Western Conference Final.

* Kane (1-2—3), Jonathan Toews (1-2—3) and Brent Seabrook (1-2—3) all posted three points for the Blackhawks, who improved to 13-2-0 in their past 15 outings.

* Kane now has five game-winning goals this season, tops in the NHL. He matched a career high with six such tallies in 2013-14 (also in 2009-10).

* Toews notched his second straight multi-point performance, following 0-2—2 Sunday vs. CGY. Seabrook recorded his first three-point game since Dec. 5, 2010 vs. CGY (0-3—3).

* Antti Raanta made 26 saves to pick up his fourth straight victory, establishing a career high.

* At 22-9-1 (45 points), the Blackhawks trail the Ducks (21-7-5, 47 points) by two points for the top spot in the Western Conference and NHL standings. They also hold one game in hand and lead in ROW (CHI: 18, ANA: 17).

. . . PREDATORS CONTINUE HOME-ICE SUCCESS, KEEP PACE
Pekka Rinne made 33 saves – and denied all three shootout attempts he faced – to earn his League-leading 20th win and backstop the Predators to their eight victory in their last nine outings at Bridgestone Arena.

* The Predators improved to 12-2-1 (25 points) this season at Bridgestone Arena, tied for the most home-ice wins and points in the Western Conference (w/ STL).

* At 20-8-2 overall (42 points), the Predators also kept pace with the Blackhawks (22-9-1, 45 points) and Blues (21-8-2, 44 points) for the top spot in the Central Division.

* Rinne became the first goaltender to reach 20 wins this season (27 GP). Elias says he is the first netminder in Predators history to earn that distinction. Rinne also leads the League with a 1.76 goals-against average and .937 save percentage.

* Derek Roy potted the lone marker in the shootout. Filip Forsberg added an assist; he continues to pace all rookies in goals (12), assists (18) and points (30).

* The Predators recorded their first win over the Bruins since March 17, 2011, snapping a three-game skid (0-1-2), and now have won five of their last seven meetings at Bridgestone Arena dating to Feb. 17, 2003.

NASH, RANGERS ROLL THROUGH WESTERN CANADA
Rick Nash scored twice, including his 20th career shorthanded marker and 58th career game-winning goal, to help the Rangers complete a 3-0-0 swing through Western Canada.

* Nash became the third player to reach 20 goals this season, joining Dallas’ Tyler Seguin (23) and St. Louis’ Vladimir Tarasenko (20). Nash achieved the feat in his 29th game; Elias says that only four other Rangers players since 1977-78 have recorded 20 goals before the team’s 30th game in one season: Adam Graves (Game 28 in 1993-94), Jaromir Jagr (Game 24 in 2005-06), Brendan Shanahan (Game 27 in 2006-07) and Marian Gaborik (Game 27 in 2009-10).

* Nash also extended his point streak to a career-long 11 games (8-6—14). He has found the scoresheet in 24 of 29 appearances this season, leading the club and sharing 10th in the NHL with 20-13—33.

* Derek Stepan added 1-1—2 for his third multi-point performance of the season. He has registered points in 12 of 17 contests, ranking fourth on the Rangers with 3-13—16 despite missing 12 games.

* The Rangers improved to 6-1-3 versus Western Conference opponents this season, including a 4-1-0 mark against the Pacific Division. They also recorded their fourth win in their last five meetings with the Flames dating to Nov. 22, 2010.

BEST OF THE REST
Highlights from the rest of Tuesday’s action:

* Oliver Ekman-Larsson scored with 0.3 seconds left remaining in overtime to help the Coyotes snap a nine-game losing streak at Gila River Arena (0-6-3). Ekman-Larsson now has four career overtime goals, including two others this season (Oct. 11 vs. LAK and Oct. 25 vs. FLA). He also leads all defensemen with four game-winning goals in 2014-15 after posting a career-high six such tallies last season (tied for the most among blueliners). The Coyotes earned their fourth consecutive win over the Oilers and have collected points in 17 straight meetings dating to March 17, 2011 (14-0-3).

* Andrei Vasilevskiy, the 19th overall selection in the 2012 NHL Draft, recorded 23 saves to power the Lightning to a victory in his League debut. Per Elias, he is just the third goaltender in franchise history to pick up a win in his NHL debut, joining Cedrick Desjardins (Dec. 30, 2010 vs. MTL) and Kristers Gudlevskis (April 11, 2014 vs. CBJ). Vasilevskiy also is the third goaltender this season to a post a win in his NHL debut, following Chicago’s Scott Darling (Oct. 26 vs. OTT) and San Jose’s Troy Grosenick (Nov. 16 at CAR). The Lightning registered their sixth consecutive victory over the Flyers dating to March 18, 2013.

* Down 1-0 after the first period, the Jets scored five unanswered goals – highlighted by 2-1—3 from Mark Scheifele – to improve to 6-1-3 in their last 10 outings. Scheifele had never recorded three or more points in his NHL career prior to Thursday (103 GP), but has two such performances over his last three contests (also Dec. 11 at COL: 1-2—3). Michael Frolik and Evander Kane each added 1-1—2; Frolik has three multi-point games in his past four outings, totaling 2-4—6 in that span. The Jets improved to 9-1-0 in their last 10 meetings with the Sabres dating to Jan. 7, 2012, including three consecutive victories.
