CLOSE GAMES HIGHLIGHT TUESDAY’S ACTION
Of the nine games contested Tuesday:

* Eight were tied or within one goal entering the third period.

* Six featured one-goal margins, including five that went past regulation (ANA-PHI, SJS-WSH, BUF-CAR, COL-TOR, CGY-NSH).

* Four saw the tying goal scored with less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation (ANA-PHI, SJS-WSH, BUF-CAR, COL-TOR). Of those games, two featured a tying goal in the final five minutes: Sharks-Capitals (15:25 by Troy Brouwer, WSH) and Sabres-Hurricanes (18:12 by Zach Boychuk, CAR).

* Two saw the winning goal scored with less than 10 minutes remaining in regulation (DAL-CBJ, NJD-TBL).

* Three teams improved to 3-0-0: the Islanders, Sharks and Devils. The Ducks also won their third consecutive outing (3-1-0).

SHARKS HANG ON AGAINST CAPITALS TO REMAIN PERFECT
After jumping to a 3-0 lead in the opening 10 minutes of the game, the Sharks held on – courtesy of a shootout goal by Joe Pavelski – to defeat the Capitals and improve to 3-0-0.

* After being healthy scratches in each of the Sharks’ first two games of the season, Matt Irwin (2-0—2) and John Scott (1-0—1) combined to give the team an early 3-0 lead.

* Irwin found the back of the net twice in the first 4:36 of the first period. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, he broke a franchise record for the fastest two goals by one player to start a game. The previous mark was held by Tony Granato, who scored twice in the opening 4:49 of a 7-6 victory Oct. 6, 1996 at LAK.

* Pavelski also scored in regulation, his first of the season. In 2013-14, Pavelski recorded a career-high 41 goals, becoming the fourth player in Sharks history to reach the 40-goal milestone. Only Jonathan Cheechoo (56 in 2005-06), Owen Nolan (44 in 1999-00) and Patrick Marleau (44 in 2009-10) have scored more goals in one season for the club.

* Tommy Wingels (1-1—2) and Joe Thornton (0-2—2) each had multi-point performances. Wingels now has two such games in 2014-15 (3 GP); he only had six such performances last season (77 GP).

* Scott Hannan played in his 1,000th NHL game, becoming the 291st player in League history – and 97th defenseman – to reach that milestone. He also became the third Sharks draft pick to appear in 1,000 NHL games, joining Ray Whitney and Marleau.

ISLANDERS STORM BACK TO DEFEAT RIVAL RANGERS
Trailing late in the second period, the Islanders scored five consecutive goals – including three in the opening 5:20 of the third period to break a 2-2 tie – to win the first edition of the “Battle of New York.”

* The Islanders improved to 3-0-0 for the first time since 2001-02 and for just the fourth time in franchise history (also, 1976-77 and 1987-88). The team also has won its first two road games of the season for the first time since 2001-02, when they were victorious in their opening six as visitors.

* John Tavares posted 1-1—2, including the tying goal in the second period, for his third consecutive multi-point game. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, he became just the second player in Islanders history to open the season with three straight multi-point performances. The other: Mike Bossy, who started the 1984-85 campaign with seven consecutive multi-point games.

* Three other Islanders registered multiple points: Mikhail Grabovski (1-1—2), Kyle Okposo (1-1—2) and Ryan Strome (0-2—2). Okposo scored the 100th goal of his NHL career, becoming the 27th player in Islanders history to record at least 100 goals with the team.

* Brock Nelson added his fourth goal of the season (4-3—7). He and Tavares (2-5—7) are tied for the League lead in points.

* Preseason acquisitions Johnny Boychuk and Nick Leddy both found the back of the net. Boychuk (2-4—6) has recorded at least one point in each of his first three games with the team, including 2-3—5 on the power play. That equals his production with the man-advantage from his first 321 NHL games (1-4—5).

* Jaroslav Halak made 40 saves, including 20 in the second period, to pick up his second victory with the team. Elias says that Halak now is 12-0-3 in the last 15 games in which he has faced 40 or more shots on goal.

Islanders defenseman Travis Hamonic will be featured in the newest episode of ESPN’s award-winning newsmagazine, “E:60,” airing tonight at 7:00 p.m. ET.

CAMMALLERI, DEVILS EDGE LIGHTNING
Mike Cammalleri registered 1-1—2, including the tiebreaking goal with 8:41 remaining in regulation, to power the Devils to their third consecutive victory (all on the road).

* Cammalleri (4-1—5) has found the back of the net in each of his first three games since joining the Devils as a free agent. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, he is just the second player in franchise history to score a goal in each of his first three outings with the club. The other: Doug Gilmour, who found the back of the net in four consecutive games after being acquired by the Devils in a February 1997 trade.

* Cory Schneider made 26 saves to improve to 3-0-0 with a 2.00 goals-against average and .937 save percentage. He also now owns a 2-0-1 record in three career appearances against the Lightning.

STARS SHINE FOR DALLAS
After being held off the scoresheet in each of the club’s first two games of the season, Tyler Seguin (3-0—3) and Jamie Benn (1-3—4) combined to lead the Stars to their first victory of 2014-15.

* Seguin recorded his fifth career hat trick, including the tiebreaking goal at 12:16 of the third period, and his fourth three-goal game since joining the Stars last season. His three hat tricks in 2013-14 tied for the League lead with Max Pacioretty (MTL) and Joe Pavelski (SJS).

* ICYMI: Benn fought off multiple defenders to pot his first goal of the season. He now has three career games with four or more points. The other two came last season: Nov. 14 at CGY (1-5—6) and Jan. 23 vs. TOR (1-3—4).

* The Stars improved to 32-13-5 all-time against the Blue Jackets, including a 17-6-3 mark on the road.

“THAT ’70s LINE” AGAIN LEADS KINGS
“That ’70s Line” – the trio of Tanner Pearson (2-1—3, +2), Jeff Carter (1-1—2, +3) and Tyler Toffoli (1-1—2, +3) – combined for 4-3—7 and a +8 rating to power the Kings to their second consecutive victory.

* Pearson (4-2—6, +6), Carter (3-2—5, +8) and Toffoli (2-3—5, +8) now have combined for 9-7—16 and a +22 rating over the team’s last three games, with each player registering points in all three contests.

* Pearson posted a career-high two goals and three points. He also extended his goal streak to three games, a career long.

* Darryl Sutter earned his 100th win as head coach of the Kings. He reached the milestone in his 183rd game with the club, becoming the fastest coach in team history to achieve the mark. Terry Murray held the previous record with his 100th victory coming in his 197th game behind the bench.

* Sutter also became the fourth coach in NHL history to earn 100 wins with four different teams. The other clubs he has reached the milestone with: the Blackhawks (110-80-26), Sharks (192-167-75) and Flames (107-73-30).

* Dean Lombardi picked up his 300th victory as general manager of the Kings, becoming to first GM in team history to reach that milestone.

* The Kings recorded their seventh consecutive victory over the Oilers, a franchise record. They also have earned points in 11 straight against the Oilers (9-0-2) and have won five consecutive meetings at STAPLES Center.

MORE PERFORMANCES OF NOTE
Among the other notable individual performances Tuesday:

* Rangers forward Rick Nash (2-0—2) extended his goal streak to four games (6-1—7), becoming the first player in franchise history to find the back of the net in each of the team’s first four contests of a season. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Nash also became the first Rangers player to register six goals in the team’s first four games of a season since 1976-77, when Don Murdoch posted eight over their opening four outings. Nash’s six markers pace the League, while his seven points are tied for first.

* Maple Leafs forward Phil Kessel (1-1—2) scored 34 seconds into overtime to help the team overcome a third-period deficit for its second consecutive victory. The line of Kessel, Tyler Bozak (0-2—2) and James van Riemsdyk (1-0—1) combined for 2-3—5 and now has 5-7—12 over the last two games.

* Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin posted 2-1—3 for his second consecutive multi-goal game (4-1—5). With his helper, Ovechkin (393) passed Mike Gartner (392) for the second-most assists in Capitals history. He now sits 25 assists shy of tying Michal Pivonka for first in franchise history.

* Flyers forward Wayne Simmonds (1-1—2) recorded his third consecutive multi-point game and also extended his goal streak to three games (5-2—7). His seven points are tied for the League lead, while his five goals rank second.

* For the second consecutive day, Ducks rookie William Karlsson provided the winning score – this time in the shootout (his first career attempt). On Monday, Karlsson recorded his first two regulation-time goals to lift the Ducks to a 5-1 victory over the Sabres.

* Flames captain Mark Giordano posted 1-1—2, including his first goal of the season, to extend his point streak to four games (1-4—5). According to the Elias Sports Bureau, he is the first Flames player since 1989-90 to begin a season with an assist in each of the team’s first four games (Sergei Makarov: 7 games and Doug Gilmour: 4 games). Giordano, however, is the first defenseman in Flames history to achieve that feat.
