BRIERE BEATS THE BUZZER TO POWER AVALANCHE
Knotted at 1-1, Daniel Briere scored with less than a second left in regulation to lift the Avalanche to their first victory of the season.

* According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Briere’s tally marks the latest game-winning goal (in regulation) in Avalanche/Nordiques history. Prior to Monday, their latest game-winning goal was scored at 19:52 of the third period – a mark set by Jan Hejda in a 4-3 victory April 13, 2013 vs. VAN.

* Elias also says that Briere’s goal is only the fourth last-second tiebreaking goal (in regulation) over the last eight seasons. The other buzzer beaters since 2007-08 were scored by Rangers forward Brad Richards (Dec. 17, 2011 at PHX), Kings defenseman Drew Doughty (Feb. 1, 2012 vs. CBJ) and Bruins forward David Krejci (Oct. 24, 2013 vs. SJS).

* Briere became the third player to score a game-winning goal in the final minute of regulation this season – all on the road. The others to do so in the first week of the season: Canadiens forward Tomas Plekanec (19:17, Oct. 8 at TOR) and Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf (19:36, Oct. 11 at DET).

* For Briere, the goal marked the 300th tally of his NHL career. The 37-year-old Gatineau, Que., native is the 16th active player to reach that milestone. He now has 300-385—685 in 919 career regular-season games.

STAMKOS NETS HAT TRICK TO LIFT LIGHTNING
Steven Stamkos scored his eighth career hat trick, including the game-winning goal, to help the Lightning defeat the Canadiens in their first meeting since the opening round of the 2014 Stanley Cup Playoffs.

* According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Stamkos’ eight career hat tricks are tied for the second-most in the NHL since he entered the League in 2008-09 (with Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin). The only player with more in that span: Hurricanes captain Eric Staal (9).

* Stamkos also tied a franchise record for most career hat tricks, joining Martin St. Louis with eight.

* Stamkos became just the fourth player in Lightning history to record at least 12 shots on goal in a single game. The others: John Tucker (14; Dec. 16, 1992 at SJS), Brad Richards (12; March 7, 2003 vs. COL) and Vincent Lecavalier (12; March 11, 2011 vs. OTT).

* Victor Hedman (1-3—4) set a career high with four points and matched a career high with three assists (accomplished three times previously, most recently Jan. 25 vs. COL). He now has scored a goal in each of the Lightning’s first three games of 2014-15 – the longest goal streak of his NHL career. Hedman leads the League with 3-4—7 this season.

* Per Elias, Hedman is the seventh defenseman in Lightning history to record four or more points in one game and the first to do so since Dec. 23, 2006, when Dan Boyle posted 3-1—4 in a 4-3 victory vs. NYR.

* ICYMI: Defenseman Anton Stralman made a sliding kick save to rob the Canadiens of the tying goal in the second period. Stralman also made a goal-line save for the Rangers last season in Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Final.

“WILD BILL” SPARKS DUCKS
Playing in just his second game, William Karlsson scored the first two goals of his NHL career, including the game-winner, to lead the Ducks past the Sabres.

* Karlsson, known by teammates as “Wild Bill,” was selected by the Ducks in the second round (53rd overall) of the 2011 NHL Draft. The 21-year-old Marsta, Sweden, native explained the origins of his nickname following the game.

* Ryan Kesler added the first penalty-shot goal of the 2014-15 season. He has 2-3—5 in his first three games with the Ducks, tied for the team lead with captain Ryan Getzlaf (2-3—5).

* Corey Perry scored the opening goal of the game, his fourth of the season. That’s tied for the League lead with Canadiens forward Tomas Plekanec, Flyers forward Wayne Simmonds and Rangers forward Rick Nash.

ANDERSON, SENATORS OUTDUEL PANTHERS
Craig Anderson made 30 saves to record his 27th career shutout and backstop the Senators over the Panthers.

* Anderson, who played 53 games for the Panthers during parts of three seasons (2006-07 through 2008-09), improved to 11-2-1 with a 1.93 goals-against average, .938 save percentage and three shutouts in 15 career appearances versus his former club.

* According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Anderson’s career record against the Panthers includes a 10-2-0 mark with a 1.67 goals-against average and two shutouts in 12 games since he joined the Senators in February 2011. Those 10 wins are his most against any opponent in that span.

* Clarke MacArthur scored the lone goal of the game, his 18th career game-winner. He tied for the team lead with a career-high five game-winning goals in 2013-14 – one of which came against the Panthers (Nov. 9 vs. FLA).

ISLANDERS, RANGERS RENEW “BATTLE OF NEW YORK”
The Islanders visit the Rangers at Madison Square Garden in this season’s first edition of the “Battle of New York.” These clubs will face off five times in 2014-15; the Rangers won three of their five meetings last season, including a 2-1 victory in the 2014 Coors Light NHL Stadium Series at Yankee Stadium. The Rangers also have earned at least one point in 20 of their last 25 games against the Islanders dating to Dec. 17, 2009 (17-5-3) and 17 of their past 22 matchups at Madison Square Garden dating to March 5, 2007 (13-5-4). The Islanders, however, are 2-0-0 in 2014-15 following a sweep of their home-and-home series with the Hurricanes and 19-6-2 in their last 27 road games dating to last season.

SHARKS LOOK TO STAY PERFECT IN WASHINGTON
The 2-0-0 Sharks look to stay perfect when they visit the Capitals at Verizon Center. San Jose has not yielded a goal in 2014-15, becoming just the sixth team since 1943-44 to open the season with consecutive shutouts. The Sharks, however, are the first team to achieve that feat with different goaltenders starting each game: Antti Niemi Oct. 8 at LAK (34 saves) and Alex Stalock Oct. 11 vs. WPG (30 saves). The Capitals, meanwhile, are coming off a shutout of their own following a 4-0 victory Oct. 11 at BOS. This is the first of two meetings between these clubs in 2014-15; San Jose owns a 22-9-2 all-time record against Washington, including an 11-6-0 mark as visitors.
