NELSON, ISLANDERS TOPPLE HURRICANES
Brock Nelson posted a career-high two goals, two assists and four points to lead the Islanders past the Hurricanes in the first half of a back-to-back, home-and-home series.

* Nelson tied a franchise record for points in a season opener; Mike Comrie set the mark with 2-2—4 in his team debut Oct. 5, 2007 at BUF (a 6-4 victory).

* Playing in his first game since Feb. 8, John Tavares collected three assists to match a career high (accomplished seven previous times, most recently Jan. 21 at NYR). He now has 13-12—25 in 19 career games against the Hurricanes, his most goals and points versus any opponent.

* Acquired from the Bruins Oct. 4, Johnny Boychuk scored the Islanders’ opening goal and added two helpers for his first career three-point game. Elias says he also tied a franchise record for points by a defenseman in his team debut; Doug Crossman set the mark with 1-2—3 in his first game with the Islanders Oct. 5, 1989 at MIN.

* Boychuk’s goal came on the power play, just the second such goal in his 322 regular-season appearances. His lone other power-play marker was scored for the Bruins Jan. 18, 2011, also at CAR.

* Two other offseason additions made their mark for the Islanders: Mikhail Grabovski, who signed with the team as free agent, potted the game-winning goal and Jaroslav Halak, who was acquired in a trade May 1, recorded 21 saves for the victory.
