NHL Short Notes

THREE HARD LAPS

* The Blues and Sharks skated to a back-and-forth affair that featured six game-tying goals – tied for the most in a regular-season game in NHL history.

* The Wild matched the longest win streak by any team this season (6 GP) thanks to a game-winning goal by Matt Dumba in the final second of overtime.

* The Penguins earned their fourth win over the Islanders in the month of February and can achieve a rare feat with another win today versus the club.

BLUES OUTLAST SHARKS IN BACK-AND-FORTH, 13-GOAL AFFAIR

A high-scoring, back-and-forth battle between the Blues and Sharks featured 10 different goal scorers, five goals in a span of 5:56 – all in the opening 7:14 of the third period – and six game-tying tallies as St. Louis outlasted San Jose in the 13-goal affair.

* The Sharks and Blues matched the NHL mark for most game-tying goals in a regular-season game (6). Three of the last six such games have occurred in San Jose, including two involving Sharks forward Patrick Marleau (also Nov. 26, 2005). The other such contest in northern California came on April 4, 1997 when San Jose defeated Colorado 7-6 in overtime; they selected Marleau second overall in the 1997 NHL Draft less than three months later.

* This marked the second game in 2020-21 to feature at least 13 goals - Edmonton and Ottawa also combined for 13 on Jan. 31. In 2019-20, five games featured 13 or more goals.

DUMBA SCORES IN FINAL SECOND OF OVERTIME AS WILD CLAIM 6TH STRAIGHT WIN

The Kings scored three straight goals to erase a 3-0 deficit and force overtime, but Matt Dumba scored in the final second of the extra frame to give Minnesota its first six-game win streak since 2016-17. Dumba’s sixth career overtime goal made him the franchise leader as the Wild tied the Kings and Lightning for the longest winning streak in the NHL this season, one night after halting Los Angeles’ run.

* Minnesota, which has trailed for only 7:04 during its six-game winning streak, has as many wins since Feb. 18 as it did in its first dozen games of the season (6-6-0).

* Mats Zuccarello, who assisted on Dumba’s winning goal, leads the Wild and the NHL in scoring during the club's winning streak – recording at least one point in each game (3-8—11 in 6 GP).

* Kirill Kaprizov extended his point streak to five games to improve his standing as the top scorer among NHL rookies and all Minnesota players in 2020-21 (6-11—17 in 18 GP). The only player since 2014-15 to record more points in a single season as a rookie for the Wild is Jordan Greenway (12-12—24 in 2018-19, 81 GP), who had two points Saturday.

PENGUINS COMPLETE NHL-LEADING 10TH COMEBACK WIN OF SEASON

The Penguins claimed their 10th comeback win of the season to equal the Panthers for the most such victories in the NHL. Pittsburgh earned its third multi-goal comeback win of 2020-21, tied with Florida and Boston for second most in the League behind Winnipeg (5).

* Kris Letang recorded at least three points in a regular-season game for the 23rd time in his NHL career, completing the feat with his sixth career overtime goal as the Penguins defeated the Islanders for the fourth time this month. The clubs meet again today for their sixth of eight scheduled matchups in 2020-21, as Pittsburgh aims to become the first team in NHL history to defeat the same opponent at least five times in a calendar month.

LIGHTNING STRIKE EARLY AND OFTEN IN STANLEY CUP FINAL REMATCH

Nearly five months to the day since Tampa Bay defeated Dallas in the 2020 Stanley Cup Final, Lightning forwards Anthony Cirelli (1-1—2), Brayden Point and Pat Maroon all scored to lead the defending champions to victory in their first meeting of the season. Point and Cirelli combined for three of four series-clinching goals for Tampa Bay during its championship run, including the Cup-clinching goal by Point on Sept. 28, 2020.

* Maroon, meanwhile, scored his first goal against Dallas since notching the double-overtime winner for the Blues to eliminate the Stars in Game 7 of the 2019 Second Round. He also found the score sheet in the Cup-clinching game against Dallas in September, notching an assist on the second Lightning goal.

* After blanking the Stars in the Cup-clinching game, the Lightning became the 12th defending champions to shut out the finalist in the first meeting the following season. Only one team in that scenario scored more goals than Tampa Bay: Edmonton (6-0 W vs. PHI on Dec. 30, 1987).

AROUND THE RINKS ON THE BUSIEST DAY OF 2020-21 SO FAR

* Matthew Tkachuk (1-1—2) and Brady Tkachuk (1-0—1) each scored but the eldest brother emerged with a win as Calgary matched a season high with six goals. An NHL team has scored at least six goals in a game every day since Feb. 18.

* Avalanche captain Gabriel Landeskog scored his 202nd career goal and third game winner of 2020-21 as Colorado (11-6-1, 23 points) scored six or more goals for the third time this season. Landeskog trails only Auston Matthews (6) and Leon Draisaitl (4) for the most winners this season.

* John Carlson (0-2—2) factored on two of Washington’s five goals as the Capitals earned their fifth win in seven contests. Carlson recorded his 30th multi-point game dating to the start of 2019-20 – 12 more than the next closest defensemen (Roman Josi: 18 w/ NSH and Victor Hedman: 18 w/ TBL) – and ranks within the top 10 among all players over that span.

* Bobby Ryan scored the first of five Detroit tallies as the Red Wings ousted the Blackhawks and netted at least five goals in consecutive games for the first time since Dec. 4-6, 2018 (excluding shootout-deciding goals).

FLEURY EARNS 100TH REGULAR-SEASON WIN IN GOLDEN KNIGHTS UNIFORM
Marc-Andre Fleury made 28 saves and William Karlsson scored his second career overtime goal as the Golden Knights improved to 12-4-1 (25 points) to maintain their position ahead of the Wild (12-6-0, 24 points) atop the Honda West Division.

* Fleury earned his 100th win with Vegas in his 168th appearance, hitting the milestone in 51 games fewer than when he reached the mark with Pittsburgh (219 GP). With the victory, he became the first Golden Knights goaltender to reach the benchmark.

QUICK CLICKS

* Jack Campbell makes 30 saves in return, Maple Leafs shut out Oilers

* Hurricanes recover to top Panthers in shootout, end skid
* Panthers honor Vietnam veteran, Purple Heart recipient, before game

* Senators pay tribute to fan who passed away of leukemia

RANGERS AND BRUINS SET FOR ANOTHER ORIGINAL-SIX SHOWDOWN
An Original Six meeting kickstarts Sunday’s action when Chris Kreider and the Rangers clash with David Pastrnak and the Bruins for the second time in as many games.
