THREE HARD LAPS

* Andrei Vasilevskiy recorded his second double-digit win streak in as many seasons to join elite NHL company and help the Lightning (29-15-4, 62 points) strengthen their grip on second place in the Atlantic Division standings.

* Sidney Crosby scored the overtime winner and is averaging two points per game since returning the Pittsburgh lineup earlier this week.

* Sam Steel also tallied an overtime goal, with the Ducks and Penguins continuing the trend that 60 minutes is not enough in the NHL.

VASILEVSKIY EXTENDS WIN STREAK TO 10 GAMES
Lightning goaltender Andrei Vasilevskiy made 30 saves to improve to 10-0-0 in his last 10 appearances dating to Dec. 23, 2019 (1.69 GAA, .946 SV%, 2 SO) and match his career high for longest win streak, a mark set from Feb. 9 – March 5, 2019 (1.76 GAA, .943 SV%, 2 SO). He became the fourth goaltender in NHL history to record a double-digit win streak in consecutive regular seasons.

* Vasilevskiy, who owns the longest win streak by any goaltender this season, also improved to 11-0-1 in his last 12 appearances dating to Dec. 17, 2019 (1.97 GAA, .933 SV%, 2 SO). That’s two games shy of the longest point streak of his NHL career, a mark set from Oct. 9 – Nov. 16, 2017 (13-0-1).

* Tampa Bay scored at least seven goals in a game for the sixth time this season, with three of its markers on Friday being tallied by 22-year-old Anthony Cirelli who registered the first hat trick of his NHL career. The Lightning moved into a tie with the Penguins for the most games with seven-plus goals this season.

CROSBY SCORES OVERTIME WINNER AS PENGUINS RALLY PAST RED WINGS
Sidney Crosby scored the overtime winner as the Penguins earned a come-from-behind win over the Red Wings and improved to 30-13-5 (65 points) this season, moving them within four points of the League-leading Capitals (32-11-5, 69 points) for first place in the Metropolitan Division standings.

* Crosby, who has found the score sheet in all three games since returning to the Pittsburgh lineup on Tuesday (3-3—6), tallied his 15th career regular-season overtime goal to extend his franchise record and move into a tie for sixth place on the NHL’s all-time list. The only players in League history with more than 15 career regular-season overtime goals are Alex Ovechkin (23), Jaromir Jagr (19), Ilya Kovalchuk (16), Patrik Elias (16) and Daniel Sedin (16).

* Crosby became the fourth player in franchise history to score an overtime goal versus the Red Wings (regular season or playoffs), joining Mario Lemieux on April 4, 1987 (4-3 OT W), Petr Sykora in Game 5 of the 2008 Stanley Cup Final (4-3 3OT W) and Ruslan Fedotenko on Nov. 11, 2008 (7-6 OT W).

* Bryan Rust (1-1—2), a native of Pontiac, Mich., tied the game in the third period to reach the 20-goal mark for the first time in his NHL career (20-22—42 in 34 GP). Rust led the Penguins in goals during Crosby’s 28-game absence (13-18—31 in 25 GP).

Only 61 games have required a shootout in 2019-20, with almost two-thirds of the contests that have gone past regulation ending via a goal in the five-minute overtime period (65.3%; 115 of 176).

PREVIEW OF TODAY’S ACTION

OVECHKIN TWO GOALS SHY OF PASSING LEMIEUX FOR 10TH-MOST IN NHL HISTORY

Surging Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin (689-569—1,258 in 1,132 GP) enters Saturday’s matinee versus the Islanders two regular-season goals shy of passing NHL legend Mario Lemieux (690-1,033—1,723 in 915 GP) for sole possession of 10th place on the League’s all-time list.

* Ovechkin entered the week six goals back of Lemieux – scoring only five in his previous 14 outings entering Monday (5-4—9) – but has since erupted for consecutive multi-goal games to close the gap to just one (Jan. 13: 2-0—2 vs. CAR; Jan. 16: 3-0—3 vs. NJD). Ovechkin (31-16—47 in 48 GP) also began the week nine goals back of Bruins forward David Pastrnak (36-32—68 in 49 GP) in the 2019-20 Maurice “Rocket” Richard Trophy race, but now trails the 23-year-old by only five.

* Ovechkin, who has never scored multiple times in three consecutive games, has tallied 36 goals in 56 career regular-season games against the Islanders (36-19—55 in 56 GP) – his sixth-highest total versus one opponent behind the Lightning (48-43—91 in 72 GP), Jets/Thrashers (47-44—91 in 65 GP), Hurricanes (43-52—95 in 81 GP), Maple Leafs (41-32—73 in 50 GP) and Panthers (39-43—82 in 65 GP).

KANE CLOSING IN ON 1,000-POINT MILESTONE
Chicago forward Patrick Kane (380-618—998 in 951 GP), a 31-year-old native of Buffalo, N.Y., is two regular-season points shy of becoming the 10th player of U.S. nationality in NHL history to record 1,000 and can reach the milestone Saturday when the Blackhawks visit the Maple Leafs at Scotiabank Arena.

* Kane can become the youngest U.S. player in League history to reach 1,000 career regular-season points and the sixth to hit the milestone in 1,000 games or fewer.
