NHL Short Notes

THREE HARD LAPS

* Florida capped yet another frantic finish by becoming just the second team in NHL history to record two four-goal comeback wins in a single season.

* The Islanders continued the League’s comeback trend en route to extending their point streak to a franchise-record 16 games.

* David Pastrnak became the NHL’s first 20-goal scorer in 2019-20 and helped the Bruins extend their season-opening point streak at TD Garden to 12 contests.

PANTHERS OVERCOME FOUR-GOAL DEFICIT TO WIN… AGAIN
After the Panthers erased a four-goal, third-period deficit to defeat the Bruins on Nov. 12, Brett Connolly, Aaron Ekblad and Dominic Toninato scored four goals in a span of 16:44 to tie the game, setting the stage for Eklbad’s overtime winner and another frantic finish for Florida.

* Florida (2x), Washington (Oct. 25) and Winnipeg (Oct. 4) have each recorded a four-goal comeback win in 2019-20. Only four other seasons in NHL history have featured four or more games in which the winning team trailed by four or more goals (5 in 1983-84 and 1985-86; 4 in 1984-85 and 1986-87).

* Jonathan Huberdeau assisted on each of Ekblad’s two goals Thursday to boost his season totals to 10-20—30 (22 GP). After recently becoming the Panthers’ all-time leader in assists, Huberdeau required the fewest team games in franchise history to record his 30th point of a season, besting Pavel Bure’s previous mark of 23 contests in 1999-00 (20-10—30 in 23 GP).

* Joel Quenneville, who earned his 900th career win on Nov. 16, was behind the bench for the fifth four-goal comeback victory of his career - passing Glen Sather (4x) for the most by any head coach in NHL history.

ISLANDERS EXTEND POINT STREAK TO FRANCHISE-RECORD 16 GAMES

Brock Nelson (2-0—2) scored his second overtime goal in as many games to help the Islanders overcome two separate deficits and sweep their home-and-home set with the Penguins. In the process, New York extended its point streak to a franchise-record 16 games (15-0-1 dating to Oct. 12).

* Nelson, with points in each of his last five games (4-5—9), became the first player in Islanders history to score an overtime goal in consecutive games. Only one player in NHL history extended their streak to three straight contests: Andrew Cogliano (3 GP from March 7-11, 2008 w/ EDM).

* The Islanders and Penguins have completed each of their first three meetings of the season in overtime. Since 2005-06, only the Blackhawks and Ducks (3 GP in 2015-16) as well as the Flyers and Hurricanes (3 GP in 2015-16) have achieved the feat through their first three games of a season series.

* New York (16-3-1, .825) leads the League in point percentage through its first 20 games of a season for the third time in franchise history and first since 1987-88 (14-5-1, .725). The 2019-20 campaign marks the club’s highest point percentage through the first 20 games of the season, eclipsing their previous mark of .775 established in 1976-77 (14-3-3, 31 points) and matched in 1978-79 (14-3-3, 31 points).

INSIDE THE NUMBERS: THE ISLANDERS’ RECORD-SETTING POINT STREAK
Below is an in-depth look at how New York has fared over the course of its 16-game point streak.

PASTRNAK BECOMES NHL’S FIRST 20-GOAL SCORER IN 2019-20
Brad Marchand scored twice and David Pastrnak netted his 20th goal of the season as the Bruins extended their season-opening home point streak to 12 games (8-0-4). Boston’s duo have combined for a League-high 35 goals, two more than the next closest set of teammates (Edmonton’s Leon Draisaitl and Connor McDavid: 32)

* The League’s leading goal scorer (20-16—36) has found the back of the net in all but seven of 22 games in 2019-20. A Bruins player was the first in the NHL to 20 goals for the first time since 2000-01, when Bill Guerin was among a group of three to hit the mark on Dec. 9, 2000 (also Theo Fleury and Ziggy Palffy).

* Boston became the 10th team in the last 30 years to start a season with at least a point in each of its first 12 home games.

YOUTH LEAVE THEIR MARK ON A 13-GAME THURSDAY
Flyers rookie Morgan Frost (1-1—2) and second-year Hurricanes forward Andrei Svechnikov (0-1—1) each found the score sheet in Raleigh, while Canucks teammates Elias Pettersson (1-2—3) and Quinn Hughes (0-3—3) also did so in Nashville.

* Frost scored the third of five Flyers goals as Philadelphia rallied to defeat the Hurricanes. The 27th overall pick in the 2017 NHL Draft is the sixth player in Flyers history to score a goal in each of his first two career NHL games and first since David Laliberte from Oct. 31 – Nov. 2, 2009.

* Last season, Pettersson (2 GP), Anaheim’s Max Comtois (2 GP) and Los Angeles’ Carl Grundstrom (2 GP) all scored in consecutive games to begin their NHL careers. The last player to do so in his first three or more games was Evgeni Malkin in 2006-07 (7-4—11 in 6 GP).

* Svechnikov (10-14—24) is one of 32 players to produce at a point-per-game pace this season (min. 15 GP). Among those skaters, the 19-year-old forward has played the fewest minutes per game in 2019-20, averaging 16:27 time on ice per game.

* Svechnikov extended his point streak to six games and matched the longest such run by a teenager in Hurricanes team history, set by Sebastian Aho in 2016-17. Additionally, he is the fourth different player in franchise history to record a point streak of six or more games before his 20th birthday.

* Pettersson scored the first of six Canucks special-teams goals as Vancouver overcame an early deficit by scoring five power-play tallies and one shorthanded marker. Vancouver scored five power-play goals in a game for the first time since Nov. 6, 2011 (6-2 W at CHI); their franchise record for most in a game is six, a mark set Oct. 7, 1983 (10-9 W vs. MNS) and matched March 1, 1992 (11-0 W vs. CGY).

BLUES, BINNINGTON BLANK FLAMES ON THROWBACK THURSDAY
Zach Sanford (1-3—4) collected his first career four-point game and Jordan Binnington turned aside all 40 shots he faced as the Blues posted a five-goal outing while sporting their 1990s vintage jerseys.

* Sanford collected a career-high 8-12—20 in 60 GP last season with the Blues. In 2018-19, the 25-year-old native of Salem, Mass. scored the final goal for the Blues in their 4-1 win against the Bruins at TD Garden in Game 7 of the 2019 Stanley Cup Final.

* Wearing a special mask that resembled the iconic ferocious dog artworkCurtis Joseph wore when he played for the Blues in the 90s, Binnington recorded his sixth career shutout and 11th win of the season (11-3-4 in 18 GP) to tie Vegas’ Marc-Andre Fleury (11-5-2 in 19 GP) and Washington’s Braden Holtby (11-2-3 in 17 GP) for the League lead.

* Binnington became the fourth goaltender to record at least 40 saves in a shutout performance this season, joining Flames netminder David Rittich (Nov. 2 at CBJ) and the Sabres tandem of Linus Ullmark (Oct. 25 at DET) and Carter Hutton (Oct. 17 at LAK).

O CAPTAIN! MY CAPTAIN!

* Jamie Benn scored his third game-winning goal in as many outings to help the Stars extend their point streak to 10 contests (9-0-1). Benn, who scored the winner against the Oilers (Nov. 16) and Canucks (Nov. 19), became the fourth player in Stars/North Stars history to do so in three consecutive team games. The others: Jere Lehtinen (2005-06), Pierre Turgeon (2002-03) and Wayne Connelly (1967-68).

* Jack Eichel (0-1—1) saw his streak of factoring on consecutive team goals halted at seven – which dated to Nov. 16 (5-2—7). The Sabres captain, who tied the longest such run of his NHL career (also Dec. 26-31, 2015: 2-5—7), trailed only Pat LaFontaine (11 goals from Feb. 8-14, 1993) for the longest stretch in franchise history.

* Roman Josi (1-0—1) currently leads the Predators with 7-14—21, finding the scoresheet 15 of 21 games this season. He is one of two defensemen in franchise history to average at least one point per game through the team’s first 21 contests of a season (also Shea Weber in 2008-09: 10-11—21).
