NHL MORNING SKATE

HART BECOMES YOUNGEST GOALIE TO WIN FIRST NHL START SINCE PRICE

Carter Hart (20 years, 127 days) made 20 saves to become the youngest goaltender in Flyers franchise history to win his NHL debut and the youngest NHL netminder to win his first start since Carey Price. It also marked the first victory behind the Flyers bench for interim head coach Scott Gordon.

* Only one other goaltender in franchise history has played a game before age 21: Maxime Ouellet made his League debut in relief on Oct. 7, 2000 (19 years, 112 days), and made his first NHL start five days later on Oct. 12 against the Stars (19 years, 117 days).

* Did You Know? Jean-Marc Pelletier made his first NHL start on his 21st birthday, March 4, 1999 against Ottawa. He was the second-youngest goaltender to play a game for the Flyers, prior to Hart.

* Hart became the fifth-youngest goaltender since 1996-97 to win his first NHL start, and the youngest to do so since Price on Oct. 10, 2007 at age 20 years, 55 days.

* The youngest goaltender in NHL history to win his first NHL start was John Vanbiesbrouck at age 18 years, 92 days on on Dec. 5, 1981 with the Rangers. Tom Barrasso (18 years, 188 days on Oct. 5, 1983 w/ BUF) is the only other goaltender to do so before age 19.

SHARKS, STARS EARN SHUTOUT VICTORIES TO EXTEND STREAKS TO FIVE GAMES

* Joe Pavelski netted his team-leading 21st goal of the season and Martin Jones (26 saves) posted his 20th career shutout as the Sharksextended their winning streak to five contests, matching the idle Capitals for the League’s longest active run. Last season, San Jose strung together eight consecutive victories from March 12-26, three shy of the club record set in 2007-08.

* Pavelski, who has scored at least 20 goals in each of his last six seasons, sits one marker shy of matching his total from all of 2017-18 (22 in 82 GP). The Sharks captain has reached the 30-goal mark only four times in his career: 2015-16 (38), 2014-15 (37), 2013-14 (41) and 2011-12 (31).

* Jamie Benn scored his team-leading 14th goal of the season and Ben Bishop (21 saves) and Anton Khudobin (3 saves) combined to shut down the League’s third-highest scoring team (tied) as the Stars defeated the Flames for their fifth straight home win. Benn scored his 42nd career game-winning goal (first this season), one back of tying Brenden Morrow (43) for second place in Stars/North Stars franchise history behind Mike Modano (92).

* It marked the first combined shutout in Stars/North Stars franchise history and the first in the NHL since March 30, 2018 when Semyon Varlamovand Jonathan Bernier teamed up for the first tandem shutout in Avalanche/Nordiques franchise history. Only two active franchises remain without such a clean sheet: Buffalo and Vegas.

KUCHEROV REACHES 50-POINT MARK, STAMKOS TIES ST. LOUIS IN WIN
Nikita Kucherov (1-1—2) reached the 50-point mark and Steven Stamkos moved up the all-time franchise goals list as the League-leading Lightning (26-7-2, 54 points) extended their point streak to 10 contests (9-0-1 dating to Nov. 29).

* Tampa Bay has recorded at least one point in 10 consecutive games for the second time in as many seasons following a 9-0-1 run from Feb. 20 - March 10, 2018. The only longer point streaks in franchise history came in 2003-04 (14-0-4 in 18 GP), 2002-03 (7-0-6 in 13 GP) and 2013-14 (7-0-4 in 11 GP).

* Skating in his 400th NHL contest, Kucherov (15-35—50 in 35 GP) joined Avalanche teammates Mikko Rantanen (15-41—56 in 34 GP) and Nathan MacKinnon (21-32—53 in 34 GP) as the third player to reach the 50-point mark this season. Kucherov was the first player to 50 points in 2017-18, hitting the mark in the 34th game of the season on Dec. 21 (en route to his first 100-point season). There has been only one other instance in franchise history of a player reaching the benchmark in 35 or fewer games: Vincent Lecavalier (33 GP in 2007-08).

* Stamkos (699 GP), who is expected to skate in his 700th NHL game Thursday at Calgary, scored his 365th career goal to tie Martin St. Louis (972 GP) for second place on the Lightning’s all-time goals list and trails just Vincent Lecavalier (383 G in 1,037 GP).

RARE FEATS ACHIEVED FOR RANGERS, PANTHERS AND SABRES

* Rangers forward Kevin Hayes netted the go-ahead goal with 40 seconds remaining in regulation to extend his point streak to five contests and help the Rangers snap a three-game skid. Hayes, who collected the sixth shorthanded goal of his career, became the eighth NHL player to tally a shorthanded, go-ahead goal in the final minute of regulation and first since Blake Wheeler on April 8, 2017.

* Aleksander Barkov (1-1—2) scored the tying goal 58 seconds into the third period Evgenii Dadonov (2-1—3) collected three points, all in the final frame, to propel the Panthers to their second win in as many contests. Dadonov improved to 2-for-2 on career penalty shot attempts, becoming the fifth player in franchise history to convert on multiple attempts. Only five active NHL players have three or more penalty-shot goals: Brad Marchand (4-for-6) leads, followed by Ilya Kovalchuk (3-for-4), Dustin Brown (3-for-7), Patrick Marleau (3-for-7) and Eric Staal (3-for-8).

* Sam Reinhart (0-2—2) extended his career-high point streak to 11 contests with an assist on Jeff Skinner’s 25th goal of 2018-19. Skinner, meanwhile, scored for the fifth time in as many contests to eclipse his goal total from all of 2017-18 (24 in 82 GP) and become the fifth player in franchise history to hit 25 goals within the team’s first 35 games of the season.

SNEAK PEEK AT WEDNESDAY’S ACTION

OVECHKIN SETS SIGHTS ON ANOTHER 30-GOAL CAMPAIGN

After splitting their first two contests of 2018-19, Alex Ovechkin and the Capitals welcome Sidney Crosby and the Penguins to Capital One Arena. Ovechkin (29-14—43 in 32 GP) sits one tally shy of his 14th consecutive 30-goal season as he goes head-to-head against Crosby for the 48th time in the regular season (Crosby 21-45—66 in 47 GP; Ovechkin: 30-20—50 in 47 GP; PIT: 28-17-2; WSH: 19-21-7).

* Ovechkin, who has been the first NHL player to reach the 30-goal mark four times in his career, can join Mike Gartner (15) as the only players in NHL history to score 30 or more goals in each of his first 14 campaigns. In fact, Gartner (17) and Jaromir Jagr (15) are the only players in League history to score 30 or more goals in at least 14 seasons at any point.

* Only two players in NHL history have been the first to 30 goals in a season at age 33 or older: 34-year-old Bill Cook in 1930-31 and 36-year-oldTeemu Selanne in 2006-07. The only player in League history who has been the first to 30 goals in consecutive seasons after celebrating his 30th birthday: Phil Esposito in 1973-74 (age 31) and 1974-75 (age 32).
