FRIDAY QUICK HITS

* Friday marked the second day in NHL history that at least three teams rallied for wins after trailing by three or more goals.

* Alex Ovechkin became the 14th player in League history to record a hat trick in consecutive team games on multiple occasions in his career.

* Connor McDavid (2-1—3), Patrik Laine (1-0—1), Mark Scheifele (2-1—3), Thomas Chabot (1-1—2) and Mikko Rantanen (0-1—1) all exceled yet again to help their clubs earn at least a point.

TRIO OF THREE-GOAL COMEBACKS MARK RARE FEAT

For just the second time in NHL history, three teams rallied from a deficit of at least three goals to win on the same day. The Devils, Coyotes and Capitals all mounted three-goal rallies en route to victory. The only other day in NHL history to witness such a feat was Nov. 25, 1987, when the Red Wings, Canadiens, Devils and Penguins all did so.

* All three clubs have accomplished the feat in recent seasons, with both the Devils and Coyotes doing so in 2017-18. Prior to Friday, the Capitalslast won in such a fashion in 2015-16.

* The season of the comeback continues as 45.3% of games contested thus far (224 of 494 GP) have been won by a team that trailed by at least one goal. No season in NHL history has seen as many comeback victories within the first 500 games.

* The 70 multi-goal comeback wins also are the most within the first 500 games of any season. Additionally, the Devils and Coyotes boosted the 2018-19 total to 23 third-period multi-goal comeback wins - also the most within the first 500 games of any season.

* Eleven games have been won by a team that trailed by three or more goals at any point. Only six seasons in League history have witnessed more within the first 500 games: 18 in 1985-86 and 1989-90; 15 in 1987-88; and 14 in 1983-84, 1984-85 and 1986-87.

* The Penguins and Senators each won despite having two-goal leads erased, while the Jets and Blues emerged victorious after trailing by a goal. Overall, seven of eight games contested Friday saw at least one score-tying goal - the Oilers built a 3-0 lead before winning 4-1.

OVECHKIN NETS SECOND CONSECUTIVE HAT TRICK

Alex Ovechkin sparked Washington’s three-goal rally by outduelling Sebastian Aho’s four-point showing with his 22nd career hat trick and second in as many games. It also marked the 127th multi-goal game of his career.

* In 2017-18, Ovechkin became the fourth player in the NHL history - and only one outside the League’s inaugural season - to score three or more goals in consecutive team games to begin a campaign.

* The 33-year-old now is just the 14th player in League history to record a hat trick in consecutive team games on multiple occasions in his career. Only six other players have achieved the feat in the modern era, with Alex Kovalev (Feb. 7-10, 2001 and Nov. 13-14, 2001 w/ PIT) the last to do so prior to Ovechkin.

* Ovechkin leads the League with 28 goals in just 31 games this season. He is just the 18th different player in the modern era to score 28 or more goals in his team’s first 31 games and the third to do so since 1993-94. The others: Jaromir Jagr in 1995-96 (28 G in 31 GP) and 1996-97 (30 G in 31 GP) and Mario Lemieux in 1995-96 (29 G in 27 GP).

* Ovechkin also extended his point streak to 13 contests to equal a career high set from Jan. 1 – Feb. 1, 2007 (8-12—20 in 13 GP). He also pushed his goal streak to five contests, two shy of matching his career high set as a rookie in 2005-06 (Feb. 10 - March 8, 2006: 8-5—13 in 7 GP).

MORE FROM THE THREE-GOAL COMEBACK WINS

* Derek Stepan (1-1—2), Nick Schmaltz (0-2—2) and Clayton Keller (0-2—2) all contributed multiple points in Arizona’s three-goal comeback victory, with Stepan notching the overtime goal against his former club. It marked the first time since Oct. 3, 2013 that the Coyotes defeated the Rangers, snapping a nine-game drought (0-7-2), and their third win at Madison Square Garden since relocating to Arizona (also Nov. 12, 2000 and Dec. 16, 2007).

* Playing without their leading scorer Taylor Hall, the Devils fell behind three goals in the opening 10 minutes before climbing from 3-0 and 4-1 holes. Nico Hischier recorded the first overtime goal of his career to extend his point streak four games.

USUAL SUSPECTS CONTINUE RACKING UP THE POINTS

Many of the League’s top point-producers - four of whom are age 22 or younger - again played pivotal roles:

* Connor McDavid (2-1—3) picked up at least one point for an eighth straight game (6-9—15) to help the Oilers (18-12-3, 39 points) move within three points of the idle Flames (20-10-2, 42 points) for first place in the Pacific Division. McDavid tied Bryan Trottier (34) for the fifth-most games with three or more points before age 22 in NHL history.

* One night after notching his 300th career point, McDavid moved within two of 200 NHL assists. Only five players in League history have hit the milestone before age 22: Wayne Gretzky (20 years, 265 days), Sidney Crosby (21 years, 72 days), Mario Lemieux (21 years, 177 days), Dale Hawerchuk (21 years, 251 days) and Ron Francis (21 years, 346 days).

* Patrik Laine recorded his 23rd goal of the season to move into sole possession of second on the goals list in 2018-19, behind Alex Ovechkin (28). Laine, who will celebrate his 21st birthday on April 19, 2019, eclipsed Brian Bellows for the sixth-most goals by a player before age 21.

* Mark Scheifele (2-1—3) capped his fourth consecutive multi-point showing with his sixth career overtime goal to move into third on the all-time Jets/Thrashers franchise list. With a three-point night, Blake Wheeler (0-3—3) moved into sole possession of second in the League with 38 assists.

* Did You Know? Scheifele posted his fourth consecutive 20-goal campaign to become the ninth player to hit 20 goals in 2018-19. Only nine other seasons in NHL history have seen at least nine 20-goal scorers by Dec. 15 (last: nine in 1995-96).

* Mikko Rantanen notched an assist on Colorado’s tying goal in the third period to extend his career-high point streak to 13 games (6-18—24). Since the club relocated to Denver in 1995-96, only four other Avalanche players have had a point streak of 13 or more games, including teammate Nathan MacKinnon (13 GP in 2013-14 and 14 GP in 2017-18). The others: Paul Stastny (20 GP in 2006-07), Alex Tanguay (16 GP in 2002-03) and Joe Sakic (14 GP in 1999-00 and 13 GP in 2005-06).

* Rantanen (13-40—53 in 32 GP) became the ninth different player in NHL history to record 40 assists in his team’s first 32 games of a season, joining Wayne Gretzky (11x), Mario Lemieux (3x), Bobby Orr, Ron Francis, Peter Forsberg, Denis Savard, John Mullen and Evgeni Malkin.

* Thomas Chabot (9-26—35 in 33 GP) recorded two points in a Senators victory to tie John Carlson (5-30—35 in 30 GP) for the most points among NHL defensemen. Erik Karlsson (4x) is the only Senators defensemen to lead all NHL blueliners in points at the end of a season.

* Did You Know? Chabot is one of three blueliners from a Canadian team among the top five defensive scorers. Only three times in the expansion era have three or more blueliners from Canadian NHL clubs finished among the top five in points among defensemen: 1976-77 (4), 1982-83 (3) and 2014-15 (3).
