OVECHKIN SCORES 21ST CAREER HAT TRICK, EXTENDS POINT STREAK

Alex Ovechkin (3-0—3) posted his 126th career multi-goal game and 21st career hat trick to extend his League lead in goals and push his point streak to 12 games (13-6—19), one shy of matching his career high.

* Ovechkin’s 21st career hat trick was his first since Nov. 25, 2017, propelling him ahead of Pavel Bure and Darryl Sittler and into a tie with GlennAnderson and RichardMartin for 12th-most in NHL history.

* It was Ovechkin’s first three-goal game against the Red Wings, bringing his total to 13 different clubs against whom he has scored a hat trick. Only 12 players in NHL history scored a hat trick against more than 13 different clubs, with Brett Hull (20), Mario Lemieux (19) and Mike Bossy (19) holding the top three spots on that list.

* For the third time in his career, Ovechkin became the first NHL player to reach the 25-goal mark in a season (also 2006-07 and 2013-14), doing so in Washington’s 30th game. Since 2000-01, only one other player has been the first to 25 goals in 30 team games or fewer: Sidney Crosby in 2010-11 (also 30).

* Ovechkin is looking to break a tie with Bobby Hull (7x) to become the first player in NHL history to finish atop the League’s goal-scoring race eight times. The 33-year-old paces a group of seven 20-goal scorers, four of whom are age 23 or younger.

* Ovechkin (33 years, 201 days as of April 6, 2019) can become the sixth player in NHL history to lead the League in goals at age 33 or older. The only players to do so: Bill Cook in 1932-33 (36 years, 165 days), Gordie Howe in 1962-63 (34 years, 358 days), Nels Stewart in 1936-37 (34 years, 82 days), Maurice Richard in 1954-55 (33 years, 228 days) and Phil Esposito in 1974-75 (33 years, 45 days).

WILD, OILERS EXTEND STREAKS IN HIGH-SCORING AFFAIRS

The Wild and Oilers each secured wins and extended streaks in high-scoring affairs:

* Matt Dumba scored twice as the Wild netted a season-high seven goals to improve to 8-0-0 in their last eight games against the Canadiens dating to Dec. 3, 2014 (MTL: 0-8-0). Minnesota has outscored Montreal 35-10 in those contests.

* Dumba netted his 11th and 12th goals of 2018-19 (30 GP) to increase his League lead among defensemen and move within two of matching his single-season career high set last season (14-36—50 in 82 GP). Only three other defensemen in Wild franchise history have scored at least 12 goals in an entire season, with Brent Burns holding the two best goal-scoring seasons on that list (17 G in 2010-11 and 15 G in 2007-08). No defenseman on a Minnesota-based NHL club has ever led League blueliners in goals at the end of a season.

* Minnesota scored four power-play goals in a game for the first time since Oct. 14, 2010 (4 vs. EDM) and improved to 8-2-1 in 11 all-time home games versus Montreal (MTL: 3-7-1), including six straight wins. The Wild have two or fewer regulation losses on home ice against four other clubs: Panthers (9-0-2), Golden Knights (2-0-1), Bruins (6-2-3) and Lightning (11-2-0).

* Connor McDavid (1-1—2) extended his point streak to six games (4-6—10) as the Oilers pushed their winning streak to four contests, building a 6-2 lead before holding off a third-period rally by the Avalanche. McDavid, who has collected at least one point in 13 of his last 14 outings dating to Nov. 13 (7-13—20), moved within one of becoming the ninth player in NHL history to record 300 career points before his 22nd birthday (104-195—299 in 239 GP).

* Mikko Koskinen (39 saves) improved to 10-3-1 through his first 15 career appearances with the Oilers, matching the franchise record for most wins in that span (NHL debut or otherwise). Ron Low was 10-3-2 through 15 games with Edmonton from 1979-80 to 1980-81.

RANTANEN EXTENDS POINT STREAK, ECLIPSES 50 POINTS

Avalanche forward Mikko Rantanen collected 1-3—4 to extend his point streak to 12 games (6-17—23) and become the first NHL player to reach the 50-point mark this season (13-39—52 in 31 GP). The 2018-19 campaign marks the first time in NHL history that a Finnish-born player was the first to 50 points and just the second time an Avalanche/Nordiques player accomplished the feat (also Peter Forsberg in 1997-98).

* Rantanen became the fifth different player in Avalanche/Nordiques franchise history to reach the 50-point mark in the team’s first 31 or fewer games, joining Peter Stastny (31 GP in 1981-82, 29 GP in 1982-83, 31 GP in 1983-84, 30 GP in 1987-88), Marian Stastny (27 GP in 1982-83),Michel Goulet (30 GP in 1987-88) and Forsberg (29 GP in 1995-96).

* Only three other NHL players have recorded 50 or more points through their team’s first 31 games in a season since 1996-97: Jaromir Jagr (25-28—53 in 1999-00), Mario Lemieux (16-39—55 in 2002-03) and Evgeni Malkin (14-39—53 in 2008-09).

* Rantanen became the 15th different player in Avalanche/Nordiques franchise history to record at least one point in 12 or more consecutive team games and just the second to do so in the last 10 years. He joined teammate Nathan MacKinnon, who accomplished the feat from Jan. 25 – March 6, 2014 (5-13—18 in 13 GP) and Feb. 24 – March 22, 2018 (13-14—27 in 14 GP).

* Gabriel Landeskog (2-2—4) and MacKinnon (0-2—2) also collected multiple points on Tuesday. The trio have combined for 52-85—137 through the Avalanche’s first 31 games of the season (4.41 P/GP).

PETTERSSON CONTINUES STRONG PLAY AS CANUCKS MOUNT RARE COMEBACK

Elias Pettersson (1-1—2) followed up his second career five-point game by scoring the tying goal with 3:04 remaining in regulation, setting the stage for Jake Virtanen to score the game-winning goal with 1:46 left on the clock. Pettersson posted his third consecutive multi-point game to increase his League lead among rookies for goals, assists and points (16-16—32 in 27 GP; 1.19 P/GP).

* The 20-year-old is one of 46 players averaging at least a point per game in 2018-19 (min. 20 GP). Only three rookies in franchise history averaged better than 0.80 points per game (min. 50 GP): Pavel Bure in 1991-92 (0.92), Brock Boeser in 2017-18 (0.89) and Ivan Hlinka in 1981-82 (0.83).

* The Canucks won in regulation after trailing in the last 4:00 of the third period for the eighth time in franchise history. The last such instance wasOct. 8, 2000 in Tampa when they trailed 4-2 before scoring three goals in the final 2:55 to win, including the shorthanded winning goal by Denis Pederson with 25 seconds left.

BRUINS EARN 14TH CONSECUTIVE WIN AGAINST COYOTES

Brad Marchand (2-1—3) scored the 46th game-winning goal of his NHL career (all w/ BOS) to pass Dit Clapper (45) for sole possession of eighth place on the franchise’s all-time list and help the Bruins erase a 2-0 deficit to defeat the Coyotes.

* Boston improved to 14-0-0 in its last 14 games against Arizona dating to a 3-0 win in Prague, Czech Republic on Oct. 10, 2010 (ARI: 0-13-1). This marks the longest active regular-season win streak by any team versus one opponent and the Bruins’ third-longest such run ever against one opponent.

* The NHL record for longest regular-season win streak by a team versus one opponent is 23 games, a mark set by the Canadiens against the Capitals from Oct. 31, 1974 – March 25, 1978.

TEAMS RALLY IN FIVE OF 10 GAMES CONTESTED ON TUESDAY

Five of 10 games contested Tuesday featured a team overcoming a deficit of at least one goal to win (50.0%), including the Canucks and Bruinsnoted above. Nearly half of all games contested this season have been comeback wins (210 of 474 GP; 44.3%).

* Trailing 1-0 to start the third period, the Blues scored twice in span of 11 seconds to take the lead before fending off a multi-goal Panthers rally on the strength of Brayden Schenn’s winning goal with 3:55 on the clock.

* The Sabres trailed by two goals in the final frame, scoring twice in a span of 3:36 to tie the game before Jeff Skinner scored in overtime - his 21st goal of the season and fourth game-winner (third in OT). Buffalo improved to 11-2-4 in one-goal games in 2018-19, tied with Edmonton (11-1-2) for the second-most such wins in the League behind Anaheim (12-1-5).

* The Predators (20-10-1, 41 points) fell behind just 26 seconds after the opening face-off, but scored three unanswered goals - including the winner by Ryan Ellis - to overtake the idle Flames (19-10-2, 40 points) for first place in the Western Conference.

TOEWS, GETZLAF EYE CAREER MILESTONES

* Blackhawks captain Jonathan Toews (305-393—698 in 823 GP) sits two points shy of 700 in his regular-season career. He would become the seventh player to accumulate at least 700 points with the Blackhawks. Toews also can become the 16th active NHL player to hit the mark with one franchise and fourth to do so this season after Joe Pavelski (SJS), Claude Giroux (PHI) and Steven Stamkos (TBL).

* Ducks captain Ryan Getzlaf (255-644—899 in 943 GP) needs one point to become the 112th player in League history - and eighth active NHLer - to record 900 career points. Getzlaf also would become the 59th player in NHL history (sixth active) to record 900 or more points with one franchise. He would join Teemu Selanne (457-531—988 in 966 GP) as the only players to accumulate 900 points for the Ducks franchise. When Selanne hit that milestone just over seven years ago - on Dec. 10, 2011 in Nashville - Getzlaf ranked third in franchise history with 132-305—437 in 459 GP (PaulKariya ranked second: 300-369—669 in 606 GP).
