NHL MORNING SKATE

DUCKS, JETS DRAW COMMON THREAD WITH THRILLING COMEBACK WINS

The Ducks erased a four-goal deficit to win in Washington, while the Jets overcame a three-goal, third-period deficit en route to victory in New York City - one day after the Lightning climbed from a 4-1 hole to win Florida.

* Anaheim’s four-goal comeback win was the first by any NHL team in more than two years, with Winnipeg the last to achieve the feat on Oct. 19, 2016 vs. TOR. The Jets trailed 4-0 in that contest - the first NHL showdown between Patrik Laine and Auston Matthews - but Laine scored in both the opening and closing minute of the third period before netting the winner in overtime to complete the comeback and his first career hat trick.

* That contest in 2016 also marked the last time the Jets won a game in which they trailed by three or more goals in the third period - a feat they now have achieved six times as a franchise. The only other such instance since the club relocated to Winnipeg came six days prior to the aforementioned game against the Maple Leafs, when Mark Scheifele capped a Jets rally with an overtime goal against the Hurricanes on Oct. 13, 2016.

DUCKS RALLY FROM FOUR-GOAL DEFICIT IN VICTORY OVER CAPITALS

Trailing 5-1 in the second period, Ryan Getzlaf (1-2–3) and Pontus Aberg (2-1–3) helped the Ducks tally five unanswered goals - including three in the final frame - to erase a four-goal deficit in Washington and complete a sweep of their four-game road trip.

* The Ducks became the 31st road team in NHL history to overcome a deficit of at least four goals to win - and the 19th visiting club to do so in regulation (last: COL won 7-5 on March 3, 1999 at FLA). The Capitals actually were the last road team to win in any fashion after trailing by four or more goals, doing so on Dec. 23, 2008 at Madison Square Garden (5-4 OT W).

* Anaheim’s comeback marked the first time in NHL history that a team overcame a deficit of four or more goals to the defeat the defending Stanley Cup champion.

* The Ducks, who swept a road trip of at least four games for the fifth time in franchise history, won after trailing by four goals for the second time. Their first instance went past regulation, with Andrew Cogliano notching an assist on the overtime winner by Stephane Robidas at Honda Center on March 31, 2014 vs. WPG. Getzlaf also had multiple points in that contest (1-1–2).

* Overall, Sunday’s contest marked the 71st instance in NHL history of a team overcoming a deficit of four or more goals to win a regular-season game in any fashion. It was the 41st to be resolved in regulation, and just the fifth since 1995-96.

JETS POST THREE-GOAL THIRD PERIOD TO RALLY PAST RANGERS
The Jets erased a 3-0 deficit in the third period en route to their third straight win, with Mark Scheifele (1-0—1) netting the decisive shootout marker one night after scoring in overtime. The three-goal comeback win came on the heels of a victory Saturday in New Jersey in which the Jets relinquished a 3-1 lead in the third period.

* It marked the first time in Jets/Thrashers franchise history that the club surrendered a multi-goal lead in a winon one day and overcame a multi-goal deficit to win the next day. It was the 40th such instance in the 101-year history of the NHL, with four of those coming over the past three seasons (last: SJS on Feb. 10-11, 2018).

* Jets captain Blake Wheeler collected an assist on Scheifele’s 16th goal of the season to extend his point streak to five contests (1-8—9) and boost his season totals to 4-30—34 in 26 GP. He became the first player in Jets/Thrashers franchise history to record 30 assists in 26 team games or fewer.

NO LEAD IS SAFE

With wins this weekend by the Lightning, Ducks and Jets, there now have been seven instances this season of a team winning a game in which it trailed by three or more goals at any point - with five of those coming on the road.

* Winnipeg became the third team in 2018-19 to overcome a three-goal, third-period deficit to win, joining Edmonton and Calgary noted above. There were only four such comebacks all of last season, and none until Jan. 5.

* To date, 19% of games this season have witnessed a third-period comeback win of any margin (79 of 412 GP), tied for the highest such percentage at this stage of a campaign in NHL history (78 of 412 GP in 2012-13). It also marks a 27% increase over 2017-18 (62 of 412 GP).

* Overall, 2018-19 has featured 181 comeback wins, tied for the most at this point of a season in NHL history (also 181 in 2009-10).

* There also have been 58 instances of a team winning after trailing by multiple goals at any point - tied for the most such contests at this point in any NHL season (also 58 in 1985-86).

RANTANEN REACHES 45-POINT MARK AS AVALANCHE EXTEND STREAK

Mikko Rantanen (0-2—2) assisted on both Avalanche goals - scored by Nathan MacKinnon (1-1—2) and Gabriel Landeskog (1-1—2) - to reach the 45-point mark and help the club extend its point streak to 11 games (9-0-2). This marks Colorado’s longest such run since a 12-game stretch in 2006-07 (10-0-2 from Feb. 27 - March 25, 2007).

* Rantanen (11-34—45), who has held at least a share of the League lead in points since Oct. 23, became just the ninth different player since 1993-94 to record at least 45 points through his team’s first 27 games of a season.

RANGERS RETIRE VIC HADFIELD’S NO. 11 AT MADISON SQUARE GARDEN

The Rangers raised Vic Hadfield’s No. 11 to the Madison Square Garden rafters prior to Sunday’s game. He became the 10th player in franchise history to have his number retired.

* In 1971-72, Hadfield became the fourth different player in NHL history - and first Ranger - to score at least 50 goals and 100 points in the same season (50-56—106 in 78 GP). He remains one of six players in franchise history to reach the 100-point mark in a season and one of three to score at least 50 goals in a single campaign.

NHL OFFICIALS RECOGNIZED FOR MILESTONE GAMES

Linesmen Derek Nansen and Michel Cormier each celebrated their 1,000th regular-season NHL game over the weekend, with Nansen hitting the mark in the Sharks-Senators contest Saturday. Cormier, who recently reached the milestone, was honored prior to the Sharks-Canadiens game Sunday.
