OILERS’ McDAVID, DEVILS’ PALMIERI MAKE NHL HISTORY

Oilers captain Connor McDavid and Devils forward Kyle Palmieri both accomplished NHL Firsts on Tuesday:

* McDavid (2-2—4), who had contributed a point on all five Edmonton goals in 2018-19 entering Tuesday (2-3—5), factored on each of their first four goals to help the Oilers overcome a 4-1 third-period deficit and defeat the Jets. He became the first player in NHL history to record a point on nine consecutive team goals to begin a season.

* McDavid’s streak came to an end when Darnell Nurse scored the overtime winner to complete the comeback for the Oilers. Edmonton overcame a deficit of at least three goals in the third period to win a game for the ninth time in franchise history and first since Oct. 7, 2013 (5-4 SO W vs. NJD).

* Did You Know? The NHL record for most consecutive team goals a player has been involved on at any point during a season is 15, a mark set by Jaromir Jagr from Oct. 16 – Nov. 4, 1999 (7-8—15 w/ PIT).

* Palmieri (1-0—1) opened the scoring at 3:42 of the first period to become the first player in NHL history to score his team’s opening goal in four consecutive games to begin a season. Only one player in NHL history has scored his team’s opening goal in five consecutive games at any point in the regular season: Johnny Bucyk from Dec. 2-11, 1965 (w/ BOS).

* Palmieri also became the third player to score a power-play goal in each of his team’s first four games in a season since the NHL officially began tracking the statistic in 1933-34, joining Dino Ciccarelli in 1986-87 (5 GP w/ MNS) and Bronco Horvath in 1959-60 (4 GP w/ BOS).

KINKAID SHINES AS DEVILS IMPROVE TO 4-0-0

Keith Kinkaid turned aside all 24 shots he faced to record his second shutout of 2018-19 (also Oct. 11 vs. WSH) and help the Devils improve to 4-0-0 this season. New Jersey, the only team without a loss of any kind in 2018-19, won each of its first four games to begin a season for the fourth time in franchise history (also 7-0-0 in 1993-94, 4-0-0 in 1991-92 and 4-0-0 in 1995-96).

* Kinkaid improved to 4-0-0 in 2018-19 (1.00 GAA, .961 SV%, 2 SO). He became the third different goaltender in franchise history to earn wins in each of his first four appearances in a season, joining Chris Terreri (1991-92, 1993-94, 1998-99) and Martin Brodeur (1995-96).

FLEURY TIES HALL FOR 10TH PLACE ON ALL-TIME WINS LIST

Golden Knights goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury (26 saves) earned the 407th win of his NHL career to move into a tie with Glenn Hall for 10th place on the League’s all-time list among netminders.

* The Golden Knights (89 GP; 54-28-7) surpassed the Canadiens (53-47-0) for the second-most wins by a team within its first 100 regular-season games. Only the original Ottawa Senators (63-37-0) had more wins within their first 100 games. Vegas plays its 100th regular season game on Nov. 11 in Boston.

60 IS NOT ENOUGH

In addition to the Oilers, the Canucks, Rangers and Flyers also prevailed in games which required extra time:

* Brock Boeser scored his first career overtime goal 34 seconds into the extra frame to lift the Canucks to a 4-2-0 record this season, including three consecutive wins. His seven career game-winning goals lead all Canucks players since his NHL debut on March 25, 2017 – two more than franchise legend Daniel Sedin (5) over that span.

* Henrik Lundqvist made 31 saves through 65 minutes and turned aside two shootout attempts to backstop the Rangers to victory. Lundqvist earned his 59th career shootout win to tie Ryan Miller for first place on the NHL’s all-time list among goaltenders.

* The Panthers overcame a 5-2 deficit to force overtime, but Jordan Weal (1-1—2) scored the game-deciding goal in the shootout to power the Flyers to victory. Philadelphia earned a win after surrendering a three-goal lead for the first time since April 7, 2015 (5-4 W vs. NYI).

ALSO OF NOTE . . .

* Tyler Johnson (3-0—3) scored the fourth regular-season hat trick of his NHL career to help the Lightning improve to 3-1-0 this season. He recorded the seventh hat trick through the first 14 days of the 2018-19 campaign, the highest such total through the first two weeks of a season since 2014-15 (7).

* Avalanche forward Nathan MacKinnon (1-0—1) extended his season-opening goal streak to six games (7-1—8). He became the first player in Avalanche/Nordiques franchise history to record at least one goal in each of the team’s first six games to begin a season, eclipsing the previous mark set by Mats Sundin in 1992-93 (5 GP).

* Avalanche forward Mikko Rantanen (0-1—1) assisted on MacKinnon’s goal and has recorded at least one point in each of the Avalanche’s first six games (1-8—9). MacKinnon and Rantanen became the first Avalanche/Nordiques teammates to record simultaneous season-opening point streaks of at least six games since 1993-94, when Joe Sakic and Sundin did so with Quebec (7 GP).

* Wild forward Eric Staal (GWG) scored his 397th career marker and moved within three of becoming the sixth active NHL player to score 400 goals, in which he would join Alex Ovechkin (611), Patrick Marleau (536), Ilya Kovalchuk (419), Sidney Crosby (411) and Marian Gaborik (407).

* Hurricanes forward Sebastian Aho (0-1—1) extended his season-opening point streak to seven games (4-8—12). He became the sixth player in Hurricanes/Whalers franchise history to record at least one point in each of the team’s first seven games to begin a season.

METROPOLITAN DIVISION FOES SQUARE OFF IN WASHINGTON

The Capitals and the Rangers will meet for the first time this season. The franchise’s two most recognizable stars, Washington’s Alex Ovechkin and New York’s Henrik Lundqvist, have a long history in head-to-head matchups.

* Ovechkin has scored a total of 35 goals in 71 games against Lundqvist (22 regular-season, 13 playoffs), his second-highest total against any one goaltender behind Marc-Andre Fleury (36 total; 23 regular-season, 13 playoffs).

* Lundqvist, who is coming off a shootout victory over the Avalanche on Tuesday, owns a career record of 21-12-5 in 38 career regular-season appearances against the Capitals (2.65 GAA, .909 SV%, 4 SO).

FLAMES HOST BRUINS IN FIRST MEETING SINCE NHL CHINA GAMES

The Flames host the Bruins at Scotiabank Saddledome in the first meeting between the clubs since a pair of preseason contests at the 2018 O.R.G. NHL China Games in September.

* Since 2014-15, Flames forwards Johnny Gaudreau (98-197—295) and Sean Monahan (120-133—253) rank ninth among the NHL’s highest-scoring teammates with 548 combined points (218-330—548). In that same span, Bruins forwards Brad Marchand (135-148—283) and Patrice Bergeron (111-139—250) rank 10th with 533 combined points (246-287—533).
