CANADIENS ERUPT FOR SEVEN GOALS, EXTEND STREAK VERSUS DETROIT

The Canadiens erupted for seven goals to earn their sixth consecutive win against the Red Wings dating to April 8, 2017 (DET: 0-5-1), outscoring Detroit 34-14 in those contests. The franchise record for longest regular-season win streak against the Red Wings is seven games, set from Feb. 25, 1943 – Jan. 2, 1944 and matched from March 27, 2014 – Oct. 17, 2015.

* Jonathan Drouin (2-0—2) recorded the fourth multi-goal game of his NHL career and first in a Canadiens uniform, including converting on his second career penalty shot attempt. He became the third player in franchise history to score a penalty shot goal against Detroit in the longtime rivalry between the Original Six clubs, joining Ray Getliffe on Jan. 21, 1945 and Russ Courtnall on Feb. 19, 1990.

* Brendan Gallagher (1-0—1) has scored 11 goals in 18 career outings versus the Red Wings (11-6—17), including seven through the Canadiens’ current six-game win streak (7-2—9). His 11 career goals against Detroit are tied for his highest total against any NHL opponent (also 11 vs. BUF).

* Tomas Plekanec became the fourth player in franchise history to score a goal while skating in the 1,000th game of his NHL career. Plekanec, who is in his second stint with the Canadiens after appearing in 17 contests with the Maple Leafs last season, is 17 outings shy of becoming the sixth player to skate in 1,000 career regular-season games with Montreal, in which he would join Henri Richard (1,258), Larry Robinson (1,202), Bob Gainey (1,160), Jean Beliveau (1,125) and Claude Provost (1,005).

MAPLE LEAFS CONTINUE SCORCHING START TO THE SEASON

The line of Kasperi Kapanen (2-0—2), Auston Matthews (0-2—2) and Patrick Marleau (1-0—1) combined for 3-2—5 to help the Maple Leafs improve to 6-1-0 this season, including five consecutive wins. Toronto, which leads the League with 33 goals for in 2018-19, earned at least six victories through its first seven games in a season for the eighth time in franchise history and second time in as many years.

* Kapanen, who entered 2018-19 with 8-2—10 in 55 career regular-season games, scored twice to boost his totals to 4-4—8 this season (7 GP). He recorded the second multi-goal game of his NHL career (regular season and playoffs) and first since Game 2 of the 2017 First Round at WSH, which included scoring a double-overtime winner.

* Marleau scored his first goal of the season on a power play to record the 104th game-winning goal of his NHL career. He ranks seventh place on the NHL’s all-time game-winning goals list, five shy of Brendan Shanahan (109).

* Did You Know? The Maple Leafs have scored at least one power-play goal in each of their first seven games in 2018-19, tied for the second-longest such run to begin a season in franchise history behind only a 10-game streak to open the 2005-06 campaign.

MATTHEWS EXTENDS HISTORIC SEASON-OPENING POINT STREAK

Maple Leafs forward Auston Matthews recorded multiple points for the seventh time in as many games this season and has collected at least one point in each of his last 17 regular-season contests dating to Feb. 22 (17-13–30). He became the fifth player in NHL history to record multiple points in each of his team’s first seven games to open a season.

* Matthews became the sixth player in franchise history to record at least one point in each of the first seven team games to begin a season, joining Frank Mahovlich in 1961-62 (8 GP), Lanny McDonald in 1976-77 (8 GP), John Anderson in 1982-83 (8 GP), Babe Dye in 1921-22 (7 GP) and Doug Gilmour in 1993-94 (7 GP).

* He became the first player to record multiple points in at least seven consecutive team games at any point during a season since Tampa Bay’s Vincent Lecavalier from Nov. 3-19, 2007 (8 GP). He became the fifth player in Maple Leafs franchise history to do so and first since Gilmour from Feb. 11-22, 1993 (7 GP).

* Matthews also became the fourth player in Maple Leafs franchise history to record at least one point in 17 consecutive regular-season games (spanning multiple seasons or otherwise), joining Dye from Jan. 14 – Dec. 27, 1922 (20 GP), Darryl Sittler from Jan. 26 – March 8, 1978 (18 GP) and Eddie Olczyk from Dec. 2, 1989 – Jan. 8, 1990 (18 GP).

YOUTH PROPEL SENATORS TO CONSECUTIVE VICTORIES

Defenseman Maxime Lajoie (age 20) and forward Brady Tkachuk (age 19) scored the first two of four straight Senators goals to help push the team to their second straight victory and a 3-2-1 record on the season.

* Lajoie, a fifth-round pick in the 2016 NHL Draft (No. 133 overall), has recorded 4-3—7 in his first six career NHL games. No defenseman in franchise history, regardless of status, has recorded more points in their first six games with the club. Only Maple Leafs defenseman Morgan Rielly(3-10—13 in 7 GP) and teammate Thomas Chabot (2-6—8 in 6 GP) have more points among blueliners this season.

* Tkachuk (19 years, 29 days), Ottawa’s first-round pick in 2018 (No. 4 overall), notched his first career game-winning goal. The only player in franchise history to score a game-winning tally at a younger age was Alexandre Daigle, who scored two game-winning goals as an 18-year-old rookie in 1993-94. Tkachuk has recorded a point in three straight contests to improve his season totals to 3-3—6 (4 GP).

* The Senators remembered former goalie and fan favorite Ray Emery with a touching tribute to his time with the organization.

FORSBERG LIFTS PREDATORS TO THIRD STRAIGHT VICTORY

Filip Forsberg scored the game-winning goal to boost his totals to 4-2—6 this season (6 GP) and lift the Predators to their third straight victory. Nashville, which improved to 5-1-0 in 2018-19, earned at least five wins through its first six games in a season for the third time in franchise history (also 6-0-0 in 2005-06 and 5-1-0 in 2015-16).

SNEAK PEEK AT TUESDAY’S ACTION

McDAVID, LAINE FACE OFF IN SHOWDOWN OF ELITE SCORERS

Two of the NHL’s biggest stars will face off at Bell MTS Place in Winnipeg on Tuesday when Connor McDavid and the Oilers visit Patrik Laine and the Jets in the first meeting between the clubs this season.

* McDavid (2-3—5 in 3 GP), who is coming off consecutive 100-point, Art Ross Trophy-winning seasons, has been involved in all five of the Oilers goals in 2018-19. Only four players in NHL history have factored in on more than five consecutive team goals to begin a season: Adam Oates (7 in 1986-87), Aurel Joliat (6 in 1929-30), Bill Cowley (6 in 1938-39) and Andre Boudrias (6 in 1973-74).

* Laine, who won’t celebrate his 21st birthday until April 19, 2019, has recorded 82 career goals (160 GP). Only 14 players in NHL history have scored more goals before celebrating their 21st birthday, with Wayne Gretzky owning the highest such total in League history with 167.

* Laine and McDavid have faced each other in the NHL six times, splitting the head-to-head matchup at three wins apiece. McDavid has recorded 0-8—8 in those six games, while Laine has countered with 2-1—3.

PALMIERI CHASES HISTORY WITH DEVILS

Kyle Palmieri enters Tuesday’s game against the Stars with multiple goals in each of the Devils’ first three games of the season. Only two players in NHL history have opened a season with multiple goals in four consecutive team games: Cy Denneny in 1917-18 and Patrick Marleau in 2012-13. No player has opened a season with multiple goals in five consecutive team games.

* In addition, Palmieri has scored his team’s opening goal in each of the Devils’ first three games. No player in NHL history has scored his team’s opening goal in four straight games to begin a season.
