ISLANDERS STAGE IMPROBABLE RALLY TO DEFEAT RED WINGS

Down 5-2 in the final six minutes of the third period, the Islanders scored four consecutive power-play goals in a span of 3:37 to take a 6-5 lead over the Red Wings; Detroit then tied the game with 29 seconds remaining in regulation, but Brock Nelson (3-0—3) scored his third goal of the contest at 3:15 of overtime to power New York to victory. The Islanders improved to 27-23-6 (60 points) this season and claimed possession of the final Wild Card spot in the Eastern Conference standings.

* The Islanders became just the third team in NHL history to trail by at least three goals in the final 5:26 of regulation and win, joining the North Stars on March 12, 1984 vs. MTL (7-6 OT W) and Canadiens on March 15, 2014 vs. OTT (5-4 OT W).

* Nelson scored the second hat trick of his NHL career (3-1—4 on Jan. 16, 2016 vs. CBJ). He became the third player in franchise history to score a hat trick in the regular season that included an overtime goal, joining Patrick Flatley (Dec. 23, 1990 at PIT) and Michael Grabner (Feb. 13, 2011 at BUF).

BARZAL MATCHES 100-YEAR-OLD MARK WITH FIVE-POINT GAME

Islanders forward Mathew Barzal collected five assists to record his third five-point game of the season. Barzal became the second rookie in League history to record three games with at least five points in a single campaign – and first since Joe Malone(MTL) in the NHL’s inaugural season.

* Barzal – who leads all rookies in points and assists with 16-42—58 this season (56 GP) – became the third player in franchise history to record three or more games with at least five points in a single campaign, joining Mike Bossy (three different seasons) and Bryan Trottier (two different seasons). Trottier is the only Islanders player to accomplish the feat four times in a season (1978-79).

* In fact, Barzal became just the fifth player on any team in the past 20 years to record three or more games with at least five points in a single season.

BLUES, STARS INCH CLOSER TO CENTRAL DIVISION-LEADING PREDATORS

The Blues (34-20-3, 71 points) and Stars (33-19-4, 70 points) each earned wins to inch closer to the Central Division-leading Predators (32-12-9, 73 points), who were idle on Friday:

* Vladimir Tarasenko scored two of the Blues’ five goals to help St. Louis snap Winnipeg’s overall and home point streaks at eight (6-0-2) and 10 (9-0-1) games, respectively. The Blues – who occupy third place in the division – moved within two points of the second place Jets (32-14-9, 73 points).

* The Penguins tied the game with 1:13 remaining in regulation, but Tyler Seguin (1-0—1) scored the only goal of the shootout as the Stars extended their win streak to five games, the longest active run in the NHL. Seguin also scored in regulation and has recorded at least one goal in five consecutive games (6-2—8).

KINGS CLIMB PACIFIC DIVISION STANDINGS

Anze Kopitar scored for a third straight game (3-2—5) to help the Kings improve to 6-2-0 in their last eight contests, including three consecutive wins. The Kings improved to 30-19-5 (65 points) overall and moved into second place in the Pacific Division standings.

DIVISION RIVALRIES ON DISPLAY SATURDAY

Five of nine games being contested on Saturday feature teams facing a club from the same division.

* In the Atlantic Division, the second place Bruins (33-11-8, 74 points) host the Sabres at TD Garden and the third place Maple Leafs (32-19-5, 69 points) host the Senators at Air Canada Centre. Boston has won four consecutive games and boast two of the hottest players in the League: David Pastrnak, who enters Saturday on his second double-digit point streak of the season (4-8—12 in 10 GP) and Patrice Bergeron, who has scored 19 goals in his past 24 contests. Toronto, meanwhile, has won six of its last seven games while outscoring opponents by a 27-13 margin over that span.

* In the Pacific Division, the Oilers visit the third place Sharks (28-18-8, 64 points) at SAP Center. Defenseman Brent Burns has been the most productive Shark of late with 2-10—12 in his past 10 outings, while Connor McDavid leads all Edmonton skaters and ranks fourth in the League with 22-42—64 in 53 GP including a five-game point streak (7-4—11).

* In the Central Division, the Wild (29-19-6, 64 points) – who currently own the final Wild Card position in the Western Conference – put their franchise record 11-game home point streak (8-0-3) on the line when they host the Blackhawks at Xcel Energy Center.
