NHL Hockey In Houston? Would It Work?

from Abby Koenig of the Houston Press,

Why in the hell doesn't Houston have a national hockey team?

When the Houston Aeros, Houston's AHL team, announced last year that they would not be returning to H-Town in the 2013-2014 season but rather picking up and moving to Des Moines, Iowa as the Iowa Wild, Houston lost the closest thing it had to a hockey pastime. The rumors as to why the Aeros split town have less to do with Houston's interest in the sport and more to do with cashola. Apparently, the Minnesota Wild, the Aeros' affiliate NHL team, couldn't come up with a lease agreement with the Toyota Center - someone wanted more money and someone wanted to pay less, you guess which was which....

How does Texas only have one NHL team, and, furthermore, how is that team in Dallas? Think of the glorious potential of having a Houston/Dallas hockey rivalry. This isn't football where you pretend to wrestle on the field; hockey has full on battle royales with blood and guts on ice skates! I guarantee that our hockey team could kick Dallas' hockey team's ass and we don't even have one.

Dallas friction aside, Houston is a city filled with transplants. I don't need to remind you of the multitude of findings that have come out over the past few years that people cannot stop moving here. Even U-Haul filed a report saying that Houston was the most moved to city in 2012.

She makes an interesting case, although she lost some credibility when talking about how hot hockey players are…

I also didn’t appreciate her jab at the Mighty Ducks movies (whether they’re good or not, there’s a lot of nostalgia there, especially for people in their 20s and 30s).

Houston doesn’t have a hockey team because of the deal the Rockets ownership had with the Aeros ownership re: an NHL team coming into their building.

With the Aeros gone, 1 of two steps has taken place to getting a team there.  I think it’d work there.

Well, what with the league flush with biliions in cash from the monoplistic canadian tv deal, can it be long before teams appear in Mexico City, Puerto Rico, Honalulu, Vegas….

When did Texas legalize marijuana??? I must have totally missed it!!! It’s the only possible explanation for someone to once again suggest putting yet another NHL franchise in the American South!!! Seattle and Hamilton/ Toronto are the only possible destinations for a new franchise. And the Florida Panthers should be moved to the other city that loses that bid!!! Scraping the bottom of the barrel these days for would-be journalists!!!

While I do understand those that think teams like the Panthers should be moved, does anyone else see the argument of keeping them there for the good of the game? Youth hockey participation absolutely blows up when an NHL team is around. Dallas and Florida both prove that. Maybe it’s worth it?

the most moved to city? isnt that a little skewed due to most of those moving there came from New Orleans after the turmoil down there?

They *#$%@& took my Aeros and I’m still pissed. *#$%@& Les Alexander is either enjoys shitting on hockey and or has been secretly hanging out with Little Gary and scheming to get a team here. Either way I just want live hockey. NHL has more talent, but damn if I didn’t like those only $45 seats on the glass with only $10 parking 40 feet from the arena that came with the AHL.

Houston is big, but pretty sparse on tourism/sports, most people just move here to make money.  I wish I had a sport that is way better live than on TV that I could go to locally…..
