NHL Begins Cancelling Regular Season Games

NEW YORK (October 4, 2012) – The National Hockey League announced today the cancellation of the 2012-13 regular-season schedule through October 24.  A total of 82 regular-season games were scheduled for Oct. 11 through Oct. 24.

The cancellation was necessary because of the absence of a Collective Bargaining Agreement between the NHL Players’ Association and the NHL.

The important distinction (as pointed out by Brandon Worley from Defending Big D) is that the NHL only canceled the schedule, not the games.

If you have tickets, don’t expect refunds for those matches until the league has decided on a schedule of less than 82 games.

Not for nothing… but what about pushing the start of the NHL season back a month or two every year?  Start in November, miss the MLB playoffs, and decrease the window of time you have to spend fighting college football and the NHL for eyeballs.  Essentially just mirror the NBA’s schedule and claw their eyes out instead.

Either that or maybe move it up a month so that the playoffs hit ahead of the NBA’s but after the Super Bowl and the bowl games.

It’s always felt like the NHL’s scheduling was off a bit to me.
