NHL All-Star Game Tickets Continue To Trend High On Resale Market

01/25/2017 at 7:40am EST

From Tim Dolan,

It’s already almost that time of the year, as the 2017 NHL All-Star Game is set to be played this weekend on Sunday, January 29, at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. The best and most talented players in the NHL will square off in the new format that was introduced last season, with four teams -- each one hailing from each division (Atlantic, Metropolitan, Central, Pacific) -- squaring off in 3-on-3, 20-minute games, consisting of two ten-minute periods. Shootouts will determine winners if the score is tied, just like if it were a regular season game.

And as usual, tickets have been a hot item on the secondary market, with the game less than a week away. In fact, according to data provided by TicketIQ, tickets to the 2017 NHL All-Star Game are averaging a whopping $474 on the resale market, with the cheapest ticket going for as high as $144. That tops even the prices for last year’s momentous All-Star Game, which was the first under the new format, as tickets ended up averaging $436 for the event in Nashville. With this year’s edition to be hosted in LA, it may understandably be tougher for acquire tickets.

The matchups are still unknown at this time, but the teams that win the always-anticipated NHL Skills Competition, which will commence on Saturday, January 28, will choose their opponent. This is always a fun night, featuring competitions like fastest skater, breakaway challenge, hardest shot and the skills challenge relay.

Voting for the NHL All-Star game has changed, but the captains for each division can still be selected by fans. This year, they chose Carey Price (Montreal Canadiens), P.K. Subban (Nashville Predators), Sidney Crosby (Pittsburgh Penguins) and Connor McDavid (Edmonton Oilers) to represent their respective squads. Each captain then has a list of players that he can choose to fill out his roster for the skills competition, while the NHL selects the remaining All-Stars for all four teams..

Last season, the Pacific division defeated the Atlantic division, 1-0, in the championship round. This, of course, will always be a well-known All-Star Game event after former player John Scott -- who made it despite less-than-mediocre stats due to the old fan-voting system that has since been abolished -- was named All-Star MVP after scoring two goals in the semifinal round. It’s one of the most fun times during the NHL campaign, so expect much of the same this weekend in Los Angeles.
