New York Rangers beat Calgary Flames 5-2 with two Rick Nash goals

By Michael Ray,

Rick Nash had a two-goal night on Tuesday, extending the New York Rangers' winning streak to four games in a row.

Nash's goals were his 19th and 20th in the season; they helped the Rangers beat the Calgary Flames 5-2. He's also tied with Evgeni Malkin (Pittsburgh) for the longest current-season point streak in the NHL, with his eight goals and six assists giving him an 11-game point streak. It's the best in his career.

During that streak the Rangers have hit 8-3-0, letting them get back into playoff position for the Eastern Conference. They are currently 3rd in the conference's Metropolitan Division.

Rangers coach Alain Vigneault has said they need Nash playing the way he is. Like every other team they need top players to be top performers, and that's exactly what Nash is doing now.

Scoring 20 goals in 29 games represents an excellent start for Rick Nash, who just last year scored only 26 goals in 65 games. Linemate Derek Stephan has called him an "elite hockey player" and stated Nash was actually playing the same way last season, but he wasn't quite able to "find the back of the net" so much then. This year Nash has been the Rangers' best player, and fans have been able to enjoy the New York Rangers' streak in a big part thanks to his performance.

Nash opened the game's scoring at 11:22 with an unassisted goal in the first period. After Calgary's hard dump-in rimmed around the end boards and went out of the zone, Nash took the puck and moved in, using a backhand-to-forehand move to beat Karri Ramo.

Then Nash brought the score to 3-0 three minutes after the start of the second period, while killing a penalty. He'd been set up by Stepan in a two-on-one.

Nash said the biggest thing has been Stepan's great plays and getting lucky as pucks go around the boards. According to Nash, this is something "you don't want to think about too much" when everything is going right. Nash is currently tied second in the NHL thanks to three-short handed goals. Ahead of him is only Tyler Toffoli (Los Angeles) with four.

Also scoring for New York were Carl Hagelin and Chris Kreider. The team managed to win all 3 of their games in Western Canada.

Scoring for Calgary were Curtils Glencross (who scored at just 1:15 left) and Jiri Hudler. After making a great start on the season, the Flames lost six games straight in regulation -- the first time they've done it since 2010.

Flames centre Matt Stajan said it was easy to "make things happen" when the team is winning and things are going your way. But the real test is when nothing's going their way and the team is in a funk, like they are now, and they need to step up.

Their losing streak has coincided with three key forwards returning from injured reserve. Each had missed six weeks. Stajan came back for the first game in the losing streak, while Joe Colborne and Mason Raymond came back a bit later.

Stajan said it hasn't been the easiest week for the team. They've gone from being at the top to "being under water," he said, and they need to find a way out.

A key sequence in the Rangers-Flames game happened in the last minute of the 1st period, when the Rangers were up 1-0 and on the power play.

Rangers goalie Henrik Lundqvist managed to stop both Josh Jooris in a two-on-one and Lance Bouma on a four-on-two rush.

Then with time running out, Mats Zucarello raced a puck up the ice, firing a long slapshot which Ramo took care of easily. But as the puck lay at his feet, Ramo expected Kris Russell to clear the puck away -- but instead the defenceman sent it back to Ramo, and before he could cover it Kreider knocked the puck into the net.

Hartley said Karri needs to "freeze it." With the puck right in front of him, the referee managed to make the right call. With a loose puck the team came in and whacked the puck right in.

The stunning 19:52 goal left Ramo using his trapper to make a frustrated gesture towards Russell.

Hartley said it was one of the team's "best penalty kills of the season." They managed to generate three great chances to score while the Flames "didn't get a sniff."

At 11:15 in the second Stepan brought the score to 4-0, and Hartley took Ramo out. He'd faced 13 shots, and it was the second tough start in a row for the 28-year old goalie. He's fallen to 8-5-1 this season. Last start, he gave up 4 goals from 19 shots to Buffalo.
