New York Islanders Acquire Dan Boyle From The San Jose Sharks

SAN JOSE - San Jose Sharks general manager Doug Wilson announced today that the team has acquired a conditional fifth-round draft selection in the 2015 NHL Draft from the New York Islanders in exchange for defenseman Dan Boyle. If Boyle re-signs with New York prior to the start of the 2014-15 regular season, the draft pick becomes a fourth-round selection in the 2015 NHL Draft.

Boyle, 37, recorded 36 points (12-24=36) and 32 penalty minutes in 75 games played in 2013-14. The Ottawa, Ontario, native tallied 269 points (68-201=269) and 305 penalty minutes in 431 games played with San Jose. He leaves ranking first amongst franchise defensemen in goals, assists and points.

I’m really surprised SJ got a pick out of this - good on them.

No way he signs with NYI.

A 5th round pick…. guessing Kenny Holland didn’t have Boyle in his plans to use the 6-7m he’ll have leftover after signing Sheahan, Tatar, and DeKeyser.

I would assume Holland wants to see what’s available at the draft before making any moves.

Given Boyle’s desire to play for a Stanley Cup contending team, this will be a short-term relationship.

They haven’t yet.

It’s ‘conditional’ which usually means they only get it if the team can sign the player, and if George is right, then SJ will end up with nothing.

Hell, it could be a smart move.  If Boyle tells him to go screw, Snow might be able to flip Boyle’s rights to someone who might actually sign him (ie. Tampa?) for a pick…

My understanding is that it’s a 5th rounder if he doesn’t sign and a 4th rounder if he does.

I stand corrected.  Thanks for clarifying, JJ.

This is how Snow operates, understandably.  Truth be told, if anyone in EDM had half a brain, it’d be how they operated as well.  Nobody is going to go to market and CHOOSE Edmonton or Long Island.  Nobody.

However… getting the rights and then having a couple weeks to sell someone on the place…. that MIGHT actually happen.  Especially once he reminds them that they’re goin’ to Brooklyn soon…

Snow is off his rocker on some things, but this reality he does seem to actually grasp.  I would expect in the next few years for him to continue doing this with guys right before they go to market.

You may be correct on this, but this would also mean, teams like EDM and NYI have to grossly overpay to keep those types of guys.

I believe this is already the case. Has any high profile FA signed in Edmonton since Pronger left town? I can’t recall any off the top of my head. NYI basically backed Nabokov in to a corner and forced him to play there. Presently, these are not destinations that NHL’ers are enthusiastic about, it would seem.

I don’t see Boyle signing with NYI unless he somehow falls in love with living in NYC.

That in itself is huge though.
