New Contract For Getzlaf Will Have To Wait

from Eric Stephens of Ducks Blog at the OC Register,

Getzlaf’s agent, Gerry Johannson, told the Register on Friday that he has regular conversations with Ducks GM Bob Murray but the two sides have opted to start discussing numbers soon after a new CBA is reached.

“I don’t expect anything before Saturday,” Johannson said. “Ryan loves Anaheim. It certainly has been a great spot for him and he wants to stay. I just think there’s uncertainty there with what’s going on. We’re just going to hang tight.”

The Ducks have publicly stated their desire to sign Getzlaf before he becomes an unrestricted free agent next summer and Johannson said he hasn’t gotten any impression of anything different in his talks with Murray....

The next deal could find Getzlaf commanding up to $8 million annually. Johannson said talks with the Ducks have gone well to this point but there’s been no discussion on term.

So if 11 goals and 47 assists with a -11 rating gets you “up to $8 million,” I guess the Wings will have to fork over about $9M for Filppula after he scored 23 goals and 46 assists and had a +18 rating.

Maybe if owners didn’t give $8M to guys who struggle to score 20 goals a season, the league wouldn’t have to force the players to take a 20% rollback in salary every few years.
