Negotiations With High Profile UFAs In Columbus Going Nowhere

from Michael Arace of the Columbus Dispatch,

Leading scorer Artemi Panarin and Vezina-winning goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky are entering the final season of their contracts. There are no extensions in sight, for either of them, and thus training camp will begin with a pair of jumbo-sized question marks hanging over the franchise....

It’s just business.

Negotiations with Bread and Bob have been stalled for most of the summer. Either that changes, suddenly and surprisingly, or both players will become unrestricted free agents next summer.

And if that’s where this stuff is headed, it behooves the Jackets to salvage what they can by trading Bread and Bob rather than taking the risk of losing them for nothing. The New York Islanders lost All-Star center John Tavares for nothing two months ago. Nobody is saying, “Man, that was smart.”

Bye-bye Columbus’ window.  You were barely even ever open to begin with.

The is a disaster for Columbus. Just when they finally had a team which was one the rise and could be a serious Cup contender for the next couple of years, they cannot get two key figures locked up. Other teams know it so they’ll have a hard time getting max value from the pair.

Panarin obviously wants out. He’s made it pretty clear he wants to play in a bigger market. They’ll have a bit more flexibility with him because teams are always looking to add scoring punch come trade deadline.

Bob, is another story. Waiting until the trade deadline could be a disaster. Often times there are no playoff teams looking starting goaltenders. The opportunity to trade him and get value will likely be before the New Year. I’m sure the sticking point here is term. Columbus isn’t going to want long-term for a goalie who will be on the back side of his career before long.
