Holmgren didn’t wait long to start remaking the roster. We’ll see if this is a move to reinforce the existing roster, or if there will be some substantial alterations. As for Parent, you have to wonder if he went because Laviolette lost confidence in him and they decided to send him somewhere he’d have a chance to play more than 74 seconds a game. Hamhuis was on Philly’s radar at the trade deadline, or so all the chatter had it. He’s the Flyers’ poor man’s version of Roy Halladay.

Hopefully Parent will be able to develop better in an environment that’s proven to raise good defensemen. I’m sure he’s excited to go somewhere where he’ll probably get more ice time.

Still?  The playoffs just ended and free agency is a couple weeks away.  You say it as if it’s imperative that they shore up their goaltending TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Way to chime in with a non-sequiter…..Hey, let’s post about how Crosby is a weenie and Cooke is evil, everybody…

So typical from the Pens faction…

Signing Hamhuis and re-signing Coburn would devour a significant portion of salary cap space available. That doesn’t leave a lot of room for an expensive goalie (unless a trade strategy is employed), yet they overcame that weakness last season and will have better compensation next season given the defensive improvements. Signing Leighton cheaply wouldn’t be a catastrophy in my opinion. Trading Gagne, or someone like him, for a goalie might be better, but time will tell what they choose to do.

So typical from the Pens faction…

Calling Evilpens typical of the Penguins faction doesn’t imply anything positive of your faculties either.

didn’t this past playoffs tell you you dont need a ‘legit #1 goalie’ to make it to the stanley cup finals?another penguins fan that discovered hockey four years ago.

as for futher moves by flyers, i wont be surprised if the following happens, tender Coburn for one year like they did to carter, trade boucher for picks or use carter and couburn in a package for a rw and that goalie Evilpens wants us to have!

Mog,

I quite appreciate your insights and commentary.  It is generally well written and well thought.  I think you are the exception to general tone from most of those that dwell in the general Pittsburgh area.  Just look at the latest posting about Hamhuis…

Hope you are enjoying the World Cup.

UF,

Even though some of my fellow penguins fans try to undermine my defence of their general reasoning skills, I do think that calling the goaltender comments “non sequiter” is a little exaggerated. Under a salary cap system, bolstering one part of the team often means that something else is weakened or remain in a suboptimal state. The “you can’t have everything” dilemma. So investing in an expensive defenceman have consequences somewhere else. Of course, as you and FlyersFan pointed out, recent history shows that you can contend without an expensive goaltender, and there’s still plenty of time for further adjustments.

Hope you are enjoying the World Cup.

The early level of play was a little disappointing, but it’s slowly getting better.

Mog,

I am well aware of the salary cap considerations.  However, not one poster or blogger knows precisely what is going on in the Flyers’ HQ.  Word on the street is that negotiations with Coburn are going very poorly.  It appears that the two sides are headed to arbitration.  If that is the case, history has shown that Flyers’ management typically trades that asset away.  Coburn could fetch a fine reward (cheap winger/desperately needed draft pick/inexpensive defensive replacement) or could be packaged with another asset to get an 1A keeper…  Fact is no one knows.  But just because the word “Flyers” or “Philadelphia” is in an article, doesn’t mean the auto-response should be goaltending or booing Santa…..

When I see your name I don’t instantly think you are home playing with Legos and getting tanked on Akvavit while you chow down on matjes herring…

Evilpens…

You really can’t help yourself by proving my point… Ovie and a hat trick…. WTF does that have to do with the Flyers trading for Hamhuis?  Thanks for yet another gripping relevant post.  Care to comment on Lanny McDonald’s stache?  How about the Seal’s uniforms?  What other BS can you so intelligently discuss on this thread???

Perhaps Holmgren has a theory that with five top defenceman, the position of goalie isn’t as necessary as you think.  Again, what you think.  I do believe that for most of the post-season, the Flyers netminders had the top stats in the league and bested regular season leaders Brodeur and Rask and then bested playoff stud Halak…

So, thank you for the title of Genius.  I can not accept that, much like I can not accept your labelling of Douche.  However, I am pretty certain you really have issue with analysis and thought process.  Carry on, my nobleless friend.  And it is great to know that you’ve been an ignorant hockey fan since before I was born, wise olde sage…

You work in construction, don’t you?  At first I thought you were a t-ball all-star, but then when you claimed to be a hockey buffoon for ages prior to my birthing, I now realize you are in manual labor or other “professional” occupations devoid of specific didactic experiences.

your’re right on the mark. funny part about coburn is that flyers offered something to him during the season and his agent forgot to mention it to him and flyers management told him through the media to call your agent. that’s where it went sour. there are people inside flyers are leaking crap out to people but not the media. Media in philly rely on the message boards to get info.

flyers aren’t using the playoffs and finals as a evaluation point. they are using the scope of entire season on why did they underproformed in the regular season and in the playoffs to fix the problem.

I think flyers are trying to the Detroit model inwhich they are loaded with defenseman and tons of complementary players.

As for goalie is there a 1a goalie out there anymore? it seems like they aren’t available until they hit retirement. Plus if you have players and defenseman are willing to block 30+ shots a game you stick a 1b,1c or 2a goalie in net

Once again, Ken Holland is dead on about the future of hockey
