Myers Slumping In Buffalo

from Mike Harrington of the Buffalo News,

It’s only six games so you generally can’t draw any sweeping conclusions. Tyler Myers didn’t have the Calder Trophy wrapped up last October and he’s not sentenced to a sophomore slump in the same amount of time this year.

But there are troubling signs for the 20-year-old who was expected to be the Buffalo Sabres’ top defenseman. He’s been tentative on the rush, sloppy with the puck and has probably committed more brutal giveaways leading to goals than he did all of last season.

And there’s this: Entering Sunday, there have been 602 skaters to hit the ice in the NHL thus far this season. Only two have a minus-7 rating.

One is New Jersey veteran Jason Arnott. The other is Myers.

So I guess the fact the team has played so poorly has nothing to do with Myers’ bad play? He’s 20, did anyone think he was gonna be Bobby Orr already? Maybe they should have upgraded their D instead of relying on him so heavily.
