My Own Personal Hockey Nightmare

My team, playing at home, scores two goals early in the 3rd period to go up 2-0.  Then the home team gets a 4 minute power play and

does nothing with it

(sorry, they did score a goal), knowing if the do score, the game is basically over.

Then it happens, home team takes a 2 minute penalty and just over a minute later, a player on the home team plays the puck with a broken stick and is caught.

Now down 3 to 5, but still with a 2 goal lead, you think, ok, kill the 5 on 3 and your team is still good.

But the visiting team scores on the 2 man advantage and 12 seconds later, ties the score on a weird goal.

Of course, the nightmare ends when the visiting team wins in the shootout.

It happened tonight, Winnipeg visiting Washington.  Nightmare video below…

Evander Kane scores on the 5 on 3, making it 2-1 Washington.

Dustin Byfuglien, from just inside the red line, takes a shot, crazy bounce, game tied 2-2 with 2:03 left in regulation.

Bryan Little with the winning goal in the shootout.

Whoever wrote this probably didn’t watch the game. Evander Kane scored on a 6 on 3 and the Caps did score on their 4 min powerplay.

I wrote it DL and you are correct, the Caps did score on the pp and I have corrected that.

I did not watch the game, just went by the box score but what I tried to express was how a game like this one makes me nervous as a fan.

Thanks for pointing out the Jets pulled their goalie on the 5 on 3 advantage.

Hey Paul…

Your team is the Caps? And here I thought you only cared about the Wings. smile

This was one of those games.  I watched it.  Thought it was pretty much over with three minutes left.  Went to the washroom and came back and it was 2-2.  Wow!  What a game at the end!  Too bad the Jets couldn’t pack in a third goal in regulation.  But being down three points is better than being down four.

All caused by a bad broken stick call on Brooks Laich, who did play the puck with a broken stick—about a second after it had broken, and while it was still held together.  I’ve been watching hockey for 24 years and I’ve never seen a ref call that without giving the player a chance to drop the stick.
