“What I’d like to see is the Conn Smythe Trophy be renamed the Jean Beliveau Trophy, and have [Beliveau] come onto the ice with the commissioner to present the award to the MVP and then stay by the commissioner’s side for the presentation of the Stanley Cup.”

“You wouldn’t have anyone booing with Jean Beliveau on the ice, so I think that would solve the problem. I think the NHL is about the winning captain getting the Stanley Cup from the NHL president or commissioner. I would never want that to change.”

Good one, Gretzky.  And how about in order to lower the crime rate we change what acts are classified as crimes?

You know what might also work?  Getting a new commisioner who’s not a complete jackass.

Something like the no child left behind policy.  LOL

People would totally boo Bettman with Beliveau on the ice by him.  Even Gretzky has to know that.  Half of the people booing wouldn’t even have a clue who Beliveau is…

To use a man’s revered status as a shield against fan disdain for another man would be an offense which would warrant a redoubled booing effort.

And if people did boo, it would be an even bigger disgrace,  This would never happen, but I liked the idea put forth a couple of years ago: cut the commissioner out and have last years captain from the champs present it.  If a team wins two years in a row, let them pick a past player from their organization.  It’s a shame that people can’t put aside their feelings about Bettman for a few minutes when the greatest professional sports trophy in the world is being presented.

If Bettman can take the booing then there is no need for a shield. IF he can’t then let someone else present the cup. It isn’t essential he present it anyway. Just have some hall of famer from the winning team present to hand it over. End of story.

Boy do I ever hate that idea.

How about having the team’s GM present the trophy present it to his player?

I don’t think it’s that he can’t take the booing -if he couldn’t he would’ve changed something himself- it’s that there is constant booing of the commisioner when the league and probably everyone involved would rather it be a celebration.

I agree, I wish fans would save their dislike of Bettman for another forum, they can vent their spleen in places such as this blog and others.

Gretzky and NHL can’t take a hint? Get a disgrace like Bettman out of the ceremony.

They boo every commissioner when they go to present or do something in front of the public. Goodell was boo’d at the Super Bowl and draft. Although, if you notice, the NBA and MLB are starting to do their trophy presentations in the locker rooms, not on the field which avoids the booing all together. I kind of like what the soccer leagues do, the trophy presentation is actually up in the stands and the players walk through the stands to get the trophy form the league commish and team president (I think) and then the party starts.

How about anybody but Bettman?  Perhaps the Hall of Fame inductees from the previous year could do it.  Or pay Gretzky to do it himself.  The bottom line is that yearly spectacle Bettman’s presentation brings is embarrassing.

Hearing the chorus of boos transform into a round of cheers the instant the cup leaves the commissioner’s hands to be lifted by the winning captain is plenty celebratory for me.

There is absolutely no reason to rename the trophy.  Bettman will get boo’d regardless.

Personally, I have strong negative feelings about Conn Smythe. I’d love to see the trophy renamed for a player and Beliveau would be an EXCELLENT choice. I was really happy when they renamed the NHLPA MVP award after Ted Lindsay.
