Morning Line

The commissioner (Gary Bettman) promised me I was next. We even had a meeting over lunch this past season, and he had all his people here, and he goes, ‘Yeah, I promised Mike he’d be the next one to go in the Eastern Conference.’ So I expect to be in next year. Jimmy D (Devellano) is on the phone every other week reminding them.

But this is Bettman we’re talking about… do we really expect him to do the right thing?

That’s a long way from what Babcock (no way it will happen) and Holland (slim chance) have been saying.

Babs claims it will never happen because when teams in the West are picking who they want to keep between Detroit and Columbus, they are going to say Detroit every time. Probably, but their concerns should be secondary; Detroit’s concerns and wishes should come first.

Illitch and the Red Wings organization have been very patient with Bettman’s experiments over the years. They’ve given up solid rivalries with the likes of Toronto so the NHL could try and create artificial rivalries with teams like Columbus and Nashville.

The Red Wings have bent over for the NHL long enough. Time to get something that will actually be a bigger advantage to the Red Wings than the other guy.

Though I’m a huge Red Wings fan, I have to say this isn’t very fair to Columbus, who would be the last team in the Eastern time zone that would still be in the “West”.  Also, technically, Columbus is slightly further east than Detroit.

I just hope they do the right thing and get rid of East and West, because it would then all become moot.

If the Garden Gnome has been promising Ilitch that the Red Wings will move to the east, that about assures that they will stay in the west.

1.  Buttman hates the Wings.

2.  The Troll will say anything to appease an owner, but he is in Jacobs pocket and I doubt Jacobs want more competition in the east.

3.  He enjoys lying.

4.  Gary B. cares not one iota about what makes sense or might be good for hockey; he only cares about keeping his job.

PS:  No, I am not a fan of Gary Bettman.

So the reverse is fair to the Wings? Seems like a null argument since it works equally both ways.

I think it’s all a moot point anyways.  I fully expect a radical realignment next year where there will be no more East-West.

I fully expect the Wings to remain in the West because there are simply 14 members of the BoG who will object to losing a few nights of a guaranteed full house.

This is like Bettman promising the Canucks that the City of Vancouver will stop trying to blame them for the riots.

he doesn’t have the authority to make this promise.

If Gary Bettman can make and HOLD a promise that a 2/3rds majority among the Board of Governors will vote any one certain way, we should all be terrified of his power.

Bingo.

Reports are that Bettman submitted a rough draft complete redesign with six divisions (scrapping the conference format completely) at the last BoG meeting as his initial preference (rather than pick between Columbus, Detroit and Nashville), but he just offers advice; he doesn’t decide what to do.

If 18 owners would rather have 4 expansion teams in France and move Columbus and Detoit into THAT division, he’s powerless to stop them.
