“The team will make the playoffs, as I promised, 10 to 15 years in a row. There is a 10 to 15 year horizon. Woody Allen said, half of success in life is showing. Well, you’ve got to make the playoffs in order to compete for the Cup.”

-Ted Leonsis, Owner of the Washington Capitals.  More from Leonsis at Capitals Insider.

That is a pretty bold statement, particularly when only two teams post lockout have made the playoffs every year, San Jose and Detroit. Hopefully fans will keep this statement in their memory banks and ask Ted to comment on it when they fail to make the playoffs.

Well, they’ve made it 4 years in a row (and in fact won their division each of those four years), so they only need six more for his prediction to be true, and he’s willing to spend and they’ve got a young core, plus they’re in a relatively weak division.  I would be surprised if they missed the playoffs any time soon.

nobody’s pointing out that making the playoffs is nowhere near the same as winning the cup? wow.

ted needs to keep that in mind. rolling a 10 sided die doesn’t mean it’s going to come up “CUP” just because you’re rolling it. is that really his attitude?

Because he’s not saying that making the playoffs is the same as winning the Cup.

Sixteen teams make the playoffs and once you get there you can’t guarantee anything.  Teams win when they shouldn’t, teams lose when they should win in a sweep.  President’s Trophy winners get swept in the first round.

You can read anything you want into it but all he’s talking about is competing for the Cup and in order to compete for the Cup, all you need to do is make the playoffs.

And that’s a fact.  No team is going to win the Stanley Cup without making the playoffs.

I’m not a huge Leonsis fan, but I think what he’s gettign at, kinda’, is a reality check to Caps fans.

What he’s saying is that if they go another 6 years without a Cup, but are a playoff team and contender still every single year, that’s still LIGHT YEARS ahead of where the entire Caps history prior to now has been.  We’re talking about a team that could have 5 or 6 guys skating for it *right now* who could certainly possibly go down on the list of Greatest Caps In Franchise History.

Should there be accountability if they continue to add talent and still go Cup-less?  Of course, but when you come down to it these Caps teams are easily the most-talented, best teams the Capitals have ever iced, and that they’re even in the talk for the Cup every year is a testament to how far the franchise has come.

People can criticize Leonsis all they want for saying dumb things, but you can’t argue the fact that he’s helped turn the team around in a huge way.
