“I remember thinking, ‘Holy crap, I just shot myself in the head. It wasn’t like a premeditated suicide. It was stupid. I actually thought the gun wasn’t loaded. It was impulsive. Crazy, irrational. Mind spinning a hundred miles an hour. It wasn’t like I left a note. I call it an accident.”
-Clint Malarchuk, goalie coach for the Calgary Flames. More from Scott Cruickshank of the Calgary Herald.

He’s fortunate to be alive after the rifle incident. I had a friend who was cleaning a gun, and put it to his head. He pulled the trigger and thought it was unloaded. Simply put, it wasn’t.

That was a good read, Cruickshank is getting better as a writer. I’m glad to see the Flames add someone with the character of Malarchuk.

Year’s ago I was at a townhouse party with the wives and kids, with the kid’s all playing upstairs. A bunch of us went next door to see the neighbour’s gun collection of which he was very proud of - they were located upstairs in his townhouse.. He had a few hand guns on the table. A buddy with a military background picked one up, asked if it was loaded and upon hearing that it was not, examined it more closely. He made sure not to point the gun at anyone and then slowly pulled the trigger. The bullet, went through the way into the bedroom next door, where all of our kids where playing! We bolted next door ran upstairs in a sprint and were very relieved to see nobody hurt. The bullet had caromed off of the bedpost and went thru the next wall, thru the master bedroom and into the next townhouse, lodging itself between floors. The gun owner said at the time that this was the third time one of his guns had gone off by accident. Needless to say our wives were not thrilled by any of this and the party ended abruptly. Many of us have not been back there since.
