“Talking about a coaching challenge in response to one goal is like killing a house fly with a bazooka.

“All of a sudden, we’re talking about a rule change because of one goal. Our group gets paid to not panic on rule changes and not overreact. This, to me, seems like an overreaction of the highest magnitude.”

-Toronto Maple Leafs GM Brian Burke.  More from Paul Hunter of the Toronto Star.

Yes, because a bad goal call has only happened once, in the history of the league.

He’s such a lawyer, trying to completely minimize the discussion to make it seem trivial, when there’s clearly some sort of issue in verifying that goals were called properly.  Not that a coach’s challenge is the correct implementation, but at least it starts the discussion, and I think it’s a discussion they need to take seriously.

And we all know Burke would be the one whining had it been his team getting screwed…

I’d like to see a psychological profile of all the people who are against expanded replay in pro sports. These are people who are basically saying “I’m perfectly fine with the refs f*cking up the game even though we have the technology to fix it.” These are probably the same morons who say things like “everything happens for a reason” whenever tragedy strikes.

I just don’t get it. If I hear the term “human elelment” one more time in response to piss poor officiating, I’m gonna lose it.

On the upside, if I hadn’t clicked this article, I wouldn’t have seen the androgynous Chinese guy who wore a silicon old Caucasian man mask on an airplane for no apparent reason:

Or the high school principal/70s porn star/former Canadian national softball coach who stole $90,000 from his students:

I need to start reading the Toronto Star more.

Goal issues are the easiest to fix, yet we keep ignoring that fact.

What Burke misses in his simile is that killing a housefly with a bazooka would be eminently satisfying in a way that letting it have its run of the place and lay its eggs in your food would not be.

In the history of mankind, more people have been killed by flies than bazookas.
