That’s not a very fair question because it implies the existence of jounalists who pay any attention to hockey.

As much as it pains me to agree with Damien Cox, I seriously doubt there are any major cracks within ownership right now.  I’m sure there are several ownership groups that would have no problem playing this year and are not sot gung-ho about the lockout, but I’m sure Bettman has promised them that salary rollbacks would make up for any losses that some teams would incure during the lockout.  As long as the owners outside of the Jacobs wing are sufficently pacified enough to not band together and organize, it’ll be Bettman’s way or the highway.

Damien Cox is asking for something that will get an organization fined another quarter-million dollars and perhaps a loss of draft picks.

There’s no such thing as whistleblower protection here. I’m going to guess that not all 29 owners are in complete lock-step, but it doesn’t matter.  When the vote gets to 22-7 in favor of ending the lockout, all you’re going to hear is that it’s over.  Any tidbit you’re able to gather about which owner sided which way behind closed doors is either going to be “industry insider” or it’s going to come immediately preceding a fine by the league for the team which spoke.

It’s better for the owners to have the league take an aggressive anti-disclosure stance on matters like this.

Aren’t OTR quotes the bane of any journalist anyway?  Saying there are rumblings is just as hard evidence as an OTR quote. Neither holds much credibility. The credibility is really linked to the writer. For example, if Bob McKenzie writes that there are cracks in the unified front among the owners, I would tend to believe it.  If Bruce Garrioch tells me of a ten player trade I tend to believe it a little more only if it gets an E5 from Eklund first (which is pretty obvious how little credence I give him in the first place).
