The Maloofs have met with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and have for months looked into buying a hockey franchise, with Las Vegas among the possible destinations. Their interests also have expanded and included opportunities in Major League Baseball.

Geez, based on what’s going on with the NBA Kings, I’d think this is the last family I’d want owning an NHL team, especially in a fickle non-hockey market.

What I have never understood about wanting any sports franchise in Las Vegas is the fact that the city is based upon a nighttime entertainment schedule.  Most of the area’s workers work at night, and most of the tourists come for the entertainment at night.  Why would any sports franchise think that these worker’s would take a night off to go to a game?  Similarly, why would any tourist/convention attendee give up their Las Vegas casino activity, musical/comedy show or restaurant visit to go to a game?

The percentage of people who live in Las Vegas who are not connected to the casino/entertainment industry is very small, and they have been hit hard financially by the real estate crisis.  Just not sure these are the people to bring financial stability to your franchise.

Just my 2 cents.

I don’t think it’s that hard to understand the thought processes behind the southern expansion, just hard to agree with it.

The thing you have to remember about the southern and western expansion era of the NHL is that it provided more advertising opportunities for national retailers.  If you are the NHL and trying to sell the broadcasts you have a much greater chance of attracting a Home Depot if you actually play/broadcast games in every region of the country as opposed to only certain geographic areas.

In conjunction with the ability to attract national advertisers was the realization that yes, just like the movie Slap Shot, the southern/western population expansion included people who actually did want to see a hockey game.  Just not enough of them to financially sustain the franchises.
