“I really like our team now. We lost a pretty skilled guy with Jason, but I think once you get to see a guy like Alex Chiasson play for us . . . and then adding David Legwand with his experience and leadership.

“I don’t think we have the big name after Erik Karlsson, but if we bounce back, which we will, I like the way we’re going to play next year, we’re going to skate and play as a unit. I think we’re going to surprise quite a few people.”

-Pierre Dorion, assistant GM for the Ottawa Senators.  More Senators talk from Wayne Scanlan of the Ottawa Citizen.

Dorion’s comments about ‘liking the team as it is’ may represent a step back from July 1, when Bryan Murray said he had a trade in the works. It also likely means that there is no immediate interest in Erik Condra and Colin Greening, who had reportedly been offered to various teams around the league.

I think Ottawa fans are in for a long, long season in 2014-2015.  Spezza took a lot of heat, but you can’t replace a guy that talented.  A big question will be whether Turris can handle the load of being the #1 centre.  Their D is shaky at best.  Same with the goaltending.  Lehner hasn’t proven he can be a starter and Anderson is pretty streaky.

Honestly, until Melnyk either opens the purse strings to bring in some superior talent or sells the team to someone who will, I don’t see the Sens being contenders any time soon.

Is anyone else extremely curious to see how Legwand does in Ottawa?

The only thing going for Ottawa is they are in easily the weakest division in the NHL, they have as good of chance getting a playoff spot as a lottery pick.
