I’m sure it’s much worse than when GMs were stepping over eachother to hand out $90M+ contracts…

Giving the GMs time to talk to a multitude of options while giving players a brief period of time to “fall in love” with a city or a team’s mantra, or whatever it takes to convince himself that he should take a discount for a situation he’s going to enjoy more isn’t elevating the value of players.

If a player’s value is elevated by the free agency interview period, then it’s being elevated to the point where it should have been in the first place. Panicked dealing opening the flood gates on July 1st is what elevates values, because it’s GMs racing directly against each other.

This period gives the FAs a bit of time to set the marketplace. For every time Matt Niskanen gets to tell Team A that Team B offered a little more (and despite the shit about how this isn’t allowed, I don’t believe for a second that the teams and agents aren’t discussing the brass tacks), you also have Tom Gilbert sliding in behind him to convince Team A that the alternatives to spending that much on Niskanen can be incredibly valuable.

This interview period was designed to help drive down prices on top-end talent. Every single other effect it has is beneficial to both the league’s GMs and to the middle-tier alternative guys.

It’s a week of letting John Nash economics fix the emotional mess that July 1st has become.

The schmoozing period is just a set up so that one day we can have an NBA-style media frenzy for a week when a high profile player decides to tell the world he’s going to “take his talents” to another team.  Then we’ll have the “Crosby Watch” or “Doughty Watch” or some such non-sense.

There is really no way, nothing significant anyways, that a period of time for players/GMs to evaluate options can be a bad thing.
