Wow. That is beyond absurd. For one, Varlamov turned himself in, and two, who does he think is the one trying to hurt the Russian Olympic team? Sorry, but people here just don’t have the Olympics on their mind 24-7.

That’s not really relevant.  If he knows there’s a warrant out for his arrest turning himself in is the best move, whether he’s innocent or guilty.  This isn’t a movie, you don’t just go on the run.  You turn yourself in to get the legal ball rolling as quickly as possible.  Last thing you want is to drag something like this out.

The latest on Varlamov from the Denver Post.  Bail set at $5K, can travel and a restraining order.

Accuser isn’t from here.

I know Igor Ananskikh (or whatever) sounds like the Iraqi foreign affairs minister who was broadcasting that the Americans had been routed as the tanks rolled into baghdad….but Russia’s a different place than the States and Canada.

Not saying I think this, but it’s not outside the realm of possibility that some moneyed interest in Eastern Europe (read shark) would pay a Russian national (the accuser) to start problems that could get an important Russian player ejected from the games, thus, moving the line to a more favorable place for him (the shark).

Of course, I don’t know what good that would do AT GOALTENDER, since Bobrovski’s the other guy who wants the starting job. But this “conspiracy” is far more plausible than it would have been if Carey Price was the one in trouble and some Canadian minister was saying this.

Interestingly, Varlamov’s main competitor for the Olympic job is the same man with whom he vied for ice time six years ago with the U20 national team: Sergei Bobrovsky.
