There are many ways to evaluate the New York Islanders’ controversial addition of Thomas Vanek in a blockbuster deal Sunday night, but let’s start with this one: Why, in the name of Billy Smith, did they not also insist on getting goaltender Ryan Miller in the deal? Vanek, playing with John Tavares, will be a potent scoring combination, but Tavares, playing with Matt Moulson – who went to the Buffalo Sabres in the deal, along with a 2014 first-round pick and a 2015 second-round pick – was already a potent scoring combination.

That was my thought exactly.  Great addition and all, but goaltending was really what the Isles needed.

Gee, I dunno, maybe they didn’t want to pay the asking price?

GMs and scouts aren’t as dumb as the Toronto media. To Duhatshek, Miller’s an over-the-Hill American (which reduces his value in ED’s eyes; see also, the countless articles this guy’s written over the years trying to run Phil Kessel out of town).

Outside the offices of Duhatsek, Shoalts and Dontneednopunctuation Simmons, Miller’s an excellent tender who’s been in a really bad situation for a really long time and has done far better than he should have.

Have to figure there’s a bunch of GMs out there (in places like Pittsburgh, Edmonton, Philly, Tampa, Long Island, Minnesota, maybe Anaheim) saying to themselves; “if Miller can keep a joke team like Buffalo in games, imagine what he can do for us!”

Goaltender is a more important position than wing. A first round pick and Matt Moulson doesn’t get Ryan Miller thrown into a deal as an afterthought.

Snow can “insist” Miller be included all he wants; and Regier can just turn around and “insist” that Strome, De Haan and another first are too.

Larry, of course more would have to have been added to deal or perhaps he’s saying they should have made a deal for Miller instead if they could have kept Moulson since he already works nicely as Tavares’ winger.

But Miller has a limited NTC clause, so it may not even be an option. Miller may decide to “waste” the year in Buffalo and then decide where he wants to move to in the off season.
