Morning Line- Larry Brooks On Sidney Crosby

He is a role model, is Sidney Crosby, the captain of a Penguins team worthy of much more than a footnote in NHL history in the aftermath of the most notable achievement of the hard-cap era.

Et tu,Larry? I thought for sure there would be some snark involved, but even Larry Brooks is drinking the Crosby Koolaid. I suppose Sid is one of the few players who doesn’t run screaming from the interview room when Larry cranks up. I think that may explain a lot here.

Yeah, either that or he’s the best player of his generation.

One or the other, I guess.

Why is he writing like it’s a controversial take? “The three-time Cup winning captain picked first overall is not just a footnote”.

No shit.

I now expect to see mites all over the country hacking off fingers, slashing nutsacks, whine to the refs, flop on the ice at any little touch, and throwing water bottles from the bench every time a teammate gets touched.

That’s what role model has been reduced to.

I don’t know where in life people got this idea that a role model has to be a pantywaist.  Ruthless determination to win at any cost will make you successful.

Or a criminal! (I know what you meant, but hey, phrasing)

Haha, I guess its just like the reddit red pill/blue pill stuff.  You either believe things can be fair and just, or you’re aware of the harsh reality you face.  In this case, I hate to say its a snowflake mentality, but it is.

Ruthless: having or showing no pity or compassion for others.

The only place where words like “ruthless” and “at any cost” have a legitimate use in connection with the concept of a “role model” is in a war – where matters of life and death make them legitimate.

When it comes to hockey, someone who has no compassion for others (as evidenced by bashing a guy’s head into the ice) and who wants to win at any cost (as in diving, whining, throwing tantrums, etc.) is not a role model.

And if you truly believe that kind of person is a role model, PMP, then I sure as hell hope you don’t have any kids.

Hahaha, that’s just laughable.  Its a two way street.  I like his attitude, when you mess with the bull you get the horns.  Good luck giving a trophy to everyone.

Here’s an example for you, PMP.

No one ever accused Pavel Datsyuk of being a “snowflake.” He was as tough a competitor as there ever was, but he played the game fairly (as evidenced by his Lady Byng trophies). That’s a true role model.

The real “snowflake” here is Crysbaby. He needs his “safe zones” where he can whine and complain and throw water bottles when things don’t go his way. And what you characterize as “toughness” is nothing more than cheap shots from a petulant child.

That’s what i love most of all about all these discussions on him.  Everyone carrying their high and mighty moral trophy around while bashing the guys who have the real ones.  When you can’t or won’t do what it takes to be successful, you find ways to cut down those who have.  End of story.  Its a losers mindset.  If Subban didn’t want to lay there and take it, then he wouldn’t have.  Once that happened, it was symbolic of the Preds being defeated.  They’ll look back and think of PK Subban bringing listerine in and yapping online, and then watch him getting trounced by Crosby, then Crosby lifting the Cup.

And all hatred of Crosby aside, whatever, fans, not fans, whoever, 20 years ago you had fighting and you had enforcers and none of this happened.  Guys fought when their stars were getting clobbered. Then the league had to go PC and wanted to get rid of fighting, now who is left to police the games?  The refs?  I’ve seen better reffing in an 11pm beer league game.  No, the players do it themselves, by themselves, for themselves.  And a lot of the top end talent has been thrashed around the league over the past few years.  Crosby is a great example of a guy that would get mauled, let it get him off his game, then he was done.  Then he decided to do it himself.  You mess with the bull, you get the horns.  Time after time not just with him, but with most stars, opposing teams try to choke down on the guy to cancel him out, you go toe to toe, and with Crosby as the last 2 years, you lose.  The league wants an every man for himself type game, and they’re getting it.  If you can’t get on board with that, take your kid to a tennis match and be a loser forever.

Haha, here we go again.  Pavel Datsyuk.  Quit on his team with years left on his contract and left to go home.  What a role model.  Ron Francis was really good too.  Nobody cares about the Lady Byng.

Ooof. Factually inaccurate and a poor assessment of the Lady Byng Trophy.

Ok well, his hulk of a contract is sitting in Arizona right now and he’s playing in Russia while the wings rot in mediocrity and trade prospects for david legwand.  Just saying.  But good on all the lady byng winners, maybe the HOF awaits, or at least a good story to tell your grandkids while they play bubble breaker on their phone.  You know, because, nobody cares.

The sicking worship by the lemmings of Crybaby is amazing. He is a good player, but his actions undermine him as a hockey player everywhere but Pittsburgh, Bettman, and NBC.  mad

It was one year left, but who’s counting? wink

nobody cares about the Lady Byng.

A lot of people do. Including me. I’m not nobody. I may be *A* nobody, but I am indeed somebody.

Ok well, his hulk of a contract is sitting in Arizona right now

His contract was terminated. It’s one year, with a salary of what, 5 or 5.5 mil? Not so much Hulk, maybe Spider man.

while the wings rot in mediocrity and trade prospects for david legwand.

Not sure how that is Datsyuk’s fault (besides maybe holding the team afloat longer than it needed!), or what he has to do with the glut of injuries that led to the Legwand trade.

But good on all the lady byng winners, maybe the HOF awaits

Hull (both), Toe Blake, Dionne, Gretz, Bossy,  Kurri, Kariya, Francis, Sakic, St. Louis. How many of them are in the Hall, will be, or have a case for it? P.S. don’t bother bringing up nobody winners like Jiri Hudler, he doesn’t have similar credentials. smile

St. Louis won 3x, Francis 3x, Kariya 2x, Gretz 4x, Bossy 3x, Dionne, 2x, Mikita 2x, Red Kelly 3x.

You know, because, nobody cares.

As a Pens fan, I’m given up on Crosby ever reaching the kind of respect level that an Yzerman had. He shoots himself in the foot over and over again (nut shots etc etc). But honestly, heel Crosby is the best Crosby, so no complaints.

That might be the best rebuttal of someone else’s claims ever. A resounding +19 to ILH.

Is this the new “normal” these days? The guy’s an a-hole, but he’s the “best” a-hole, so no complaints?

In a lot of ways, I’m glad I’m 70 years old (with probably less than 20 years to live) because I can’t begin to fathom what a mess this world is going to be in 20 years from now with “acceptors” like PMP, nashwillo and others spreading their words of “wisdom” to those around them.
