I never understood why Joe Pavelski wasn’t a higher priority.

The guy was their captain for a reason: a totally clutch warrior who
was a huge part of their offense and identity.

Dallas signed him for only three years.

They lost Donskoi who’s getting more opportunity in Colorado
and making the most of it.

They had to dump a veteran stabilizing defender in Justin Braun.

Oh, but they still have Joe Thornton and now Patrick Marleau
As if it were ten years ago, to try and patch some holes.

They have the same two goalies who were bad most of last season and
often enough in the playoffs that guys like Couture and Hertl and Pavelski had to bail them out.

What San Jose spent to acquire Karlsson, is at the time he’s approaching UFA,
a sunk cost. Giving him a huge salary and term when he’s never been a good defender and has been plagued by major injuries impacting his mobility as he ages does not make sense. San Jose’s window was not going to be open for more than a couple years likely anyway.
