Morning Line- Jonathan Toews

“Quite frankly, I think to turn on the Olympics next year and watch hockey teams or the players representing their countries, if it’s not the best in the world, I don’t know. I don’t think you can really compare it to the World Cup or the world championships. The Olympics are a whole other thing … I think the NHL should be in the Olympics.”

-Jonathan Toews on the NHL in the Olympics.  Frank Seravalli of TSN has more including Connor McDavid's thoughts on this topic too.

The NHL is going to dwindle to the status of those rugby union matches you randomly see at 2pm on a saturday afternoon with some college kid and a mushed-mouth ex player.

Low exposure and even lower viewership?  Perfect, the best solution would be to remove the players from the only real national exposure to non traditional hockey viewers the NHL can get.

Is there some study that shows the NHL is actually benefiting from being in the Olympics?

Seems to me NHL ratings have been flatlined for the few decades they have been going to the Olympics.

I think a better argument for NHL participation is that it’s the right thing to do for the world-class athletes who compete in the league. When you’re good enough to make the absolute elite level of your craft, you should be able to represent your country every four years while you’re still an elite athlete. That window is small and shrinks fast.

I think the “do it for the exposure” argument has been found wanting.

As I have mentioned in the past, what happens if Toews, Crosby, Kane and others say they are going ike Ovechkin has stated?  Puts the pressure on both the NHL along with Hockey Canada, USA Hockey, etc.

Might be at least interesting if they didn’t allow any player who was on salary and just went completely amateur.

If any NHL players go they will definitely be suspended.

It is going to be interesting bd,Crosby along with others not mentioned above have said they want to go.

Would be a big PR nightmare for the NHL suspending their stars.

The do it for exposure argument might be wanting, but I’ve never read anything proving olympic participation hurts the NHL product or viewership.

The league’s argument for not participating is weak and shortsighted, especially given the extremely small niche that its players occupy.

AND

The world cup of hockey is not a viable replacement.  ESPN put as little effort as possible into that gimmicky affair to get a product on TV.
