Morning Line- John Tortorella

Just get rid of the coach’s challenge. Just get rid of it. The whole (reason for) being of the coach’s challenge is to get it right. If we can’t get it right on that call, then get rid of the coach’s challenge. All I did was waste a timeout. It’s discouraging. That is a no-brainer call. If they vote again for it, no coach’s challenge as far as this organization is concerned.

-John Tortorella, head coach of the Columbus Blue Jackets on a goal by Boston's Louie Eriksson.  More on the play and the Blue Jackets win over Boston by Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch.

How many goals did Holmstrom have taken away in a situation like that?

A good season’s worth?

So now Torts speaks for the whole organization?  That is a big fail Columbus.

But I do hate the challenge.

The challenge has turned into an extended timeout for coaches to use even when they know the call on the ice won’t be overturned, the whole thing is maddening.

Exactly and they use it simply in hopes it might be overturned even though in their own minds they know it probably shouldn’t be.

I’m with Torts on this one (yikes that makes me feel sick). First, that is interference. The skate is certainly part of the goalie and does impact his position. Second, these things have become a joke. Do we really need offsides called to the millimeter? Do we really need interference called exactly right ALL the time?

It kills the momentum of the team scoring the goal and takes the energy out of the home crowd. It was a good idea in principle but after seeing it in execution, I’d much rather go back to the other way.

At least with offsides the call is pretty cut and dry although the inconsistency in cameras is an issue. But goaltender interference has become a judgment call (certainly based on the video above) and instant replay shouldn’t be used for judgment calls.

I’m fine with Toronto buzzing the arena to have the officials look at replays, so long as there’s an established criterion as to what should be reviewed. I agree with you, the challenge more often than not sucks all the energy and momentum out of the building while everyone wonders what the officials are going to decide.

In this case they got it right on review as the Columbus player shoved Eriksson hard enough to create the contact between skates.  I must admit that my total hatred for Tortorella is exceeded by only by my hatred for the Boston Bruins….........................................................so everything pretty much balances out.

“We’ve got to get rid of the coach’s challenge because it went against my team.”

What next Torts, does the league need to get rid of the “whichever team scores the most goals wins” rule?  That rule isn’t helping your Blue Jackets very much either…
