Morning Line- Guy Carbonneau On The Montreal Canadiens

“You see the same thing we’ve seen over the last 10 years, which is no No. 1 centre, no No. 1 right-winger … and that’s not to disrespect the guys that they have there. But we keep talking about this, we keep mentioning it. When you don’t have that and you lose your best player and probably the best player in the NHL (Carey Price) for a long period of time … if they expected Mike Condon to replace Carey Price they were mistaken. I don’t know who made that decision, but there was something wrong.”

-Guy Carbonneau, former head coach and player for the Montreal Canadiens.  More on the Canadiens from Stu Cowen of the Montreal Gazette.

Ouch. A bit of slap in the face to the current roster but very true. Going with Condon as a backup for a team that had aspirations of winning the Cup was a bad idea. But like the rest of the NHL, they cannot have the best players at all positions.

I’ve always thought their top line was relatively weak but they had decent speed, good defense, good depth and great goaltending to make up for it. Now that the great goaltending is gone, the weaknesses get exposed.

Condon is young, he’s solid for a backup right now. But you can’t replace Carey Price, the top goalie in the NHL that they heavily relied on. I expected them to drop off a bit after Price’s injury, just not this bad.
