Morning Line- Craig Leipold

“The expansion to the South and the West has worked, without a doubt. To see Tampa as a tremendous hockey market, to see Nashville, the success with Anaheim, San Jose, and now Las Vegas.

“Revenues are up. TV ratings are better. I think the NHL is in great shape. I mean, Vegas — I’m a little jealous, for sure — but how does it get better for the NHL than what’s happening there?

“You can’t get a ticket for hockey in Vegas. Amazing.’’

-Craig Leipold, owner of the Minnesota Wild.  Patrick Reusse of the Star Tribune has more on the Gary Bettman expansion era.

Everyone loves a winner and being part of history. Lets see how Vegas does when the shine has worn off, the expansion drafties have moved on, and they have to draft and develop like everyone else. That will be the real test of the market.

Then there’s Arizona, Florida, Carolina and Atlanta.  I wouldn’t say all expansion South and West has worked “without a doubt”.

I believe the NHL has done pretty well. Our knee-jerk reaction here is to knock it every chance that comes up, but there’s no denying it’s doing well.

Yes, Vegas needs to be judged in five years. But what is happening there is beyond even the most-hopeful expectations. And the strength of hockey in TB and Nashville is impressive.

I know co-workers who went to both Nashville and the TB region over spring break (not together). Both commented on how surprised they were at how much support and following both cities NHL teams were getting.

Have to give credit where credit is due.

The Joe was half empty most nights.  DRW needs corporate tickets sales to sell out.  No one cared about the Hawks while they sucked in chicago.

Foley has been a tremendous owner.  With him at the helmet I think they’ll be fine.

Spend some time correlating attendance with season record and playoff appearances and let me know how much geography matters. Probably in any sport. People loved to point out how Phx had no fans without considering for some reason that their team was in BK, league-owned, sucked and had lease issues with their stadium.
