ESPN isn’t everything, and the league isn’t exactly folding, but hockey got less relevant in America on Wednesday, bookending an era that probably began when the NHL left ESPN after the 2004-05 lockout for NBC and Comcast, leading to that time where hockey was on the Outdoor Life Network. Then-union head Paul Kelly once said, “It doesn’t have a lot of properties people want to tune in to, unless you are a hunter or a fisherman or you like turtle wrestling.”
Well, there’s a little more hockey wilderness out there now. It was an American, Badger Bob Johnson, who coined the phrase, it’s a great day for hockey. Wednesday, for American hockey, was something less than that.
