Morning Line- An Unnamed General Manager

“More playoff teams [equals] more fan bases with the pleasure of experiencing the playoffs [which equals] more revenue for owners/players to share [which equals] more meaningful games for national rights holders [which equals] more GM/head coaches who can say they made the playoffs and hopefully keep their jobs [less turnover].”

-an unnamed NHL GM on should the playoffs be expanded when/if a 32nd team enters the NHL.  Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic (paid subscription) has much more on this topic.

Let’s go back to the days when 16 out of 21 teams made the playoffs…. sick

While we’re at it, let’s play 100 regular season games. More games = more profit…. hmmm

This is what I imagine the unnamed GM’s face looked like when talking about more playoff teams/games

Add more teams.  Add more teams to the playoffs.  Add more rounds to the playoffs.  Add ads to the jerseys.  Add more outdoor games.  Add more spotlights on the referees each game.  Add more no-goal calls.  Add more confusing rules.

Every hockey fan has asked for these things specifically for years.  Now if they would just give out a Lombardi trophy instead of the Stanley cup, they might gain those all important casual fans.

because more bigger can’t possible go sour.  i’m thinking now of the shit show that the home run derby has become and how brutally unwatchable it is now.

Sometimes I think that the NHL can’t water their league down anymore… and then I realize I’m wrong. Way wrong. This league is a joke.

I can see Ken Holland saying that stuff.  Unfortunately.

It probably wasn’t him, but could have been.

To make more money the NHL could go to 16 series from to current 8 when they expand to 32 teams. LOL

Fortunately unless they put all 32 teams in the playoffs, they really cannot expand the playoffs without giving some teams byes to the second round and I don’t think teams are going to like sitting around waiting on opponents.

The only other way, and the way the NHL would probably do it is one game playoffs for the bottom teams. Even a 3 game series would be too long off.

Just leave it well enough alone.

Or, have the 4 teams with the best records that miss the playoffs play for the right to draft #1 overall. LOL
