Starting the second would be reminiscent of the first as another early penalty would lead to a New Jersey goal. It would be Ottawa’s Bobby Ryan called for holding Jaromir Jagr that would lead to a Jagr power play goal that would be record breaking later in the night.
Continuing the power play theme of the night it would be a power play goal from Colin Greening that got the Senators on the scoreboard.
Senators would be down by two goals when late in the second Damien Brunner would give the Devils their three-goal lead back.
Frustration would mount for Ottawa and Clarke MacArthur would get a roughing and boarding call as time in the second expired.
Devils up 4-1 to start the third a hooking call on Zidlicky would cut the Devils lead in half as Milan Michalek would net a backhanded power play goal for the Senators.
Less than a minute later Eric Gelinas would put a slapshot passed Lehner to give the Devils a 5-2 win; making Jagr’s goal in the second the game winning goal and thus putting him in first place all-time with 122 game winning goals and eighty overall all-time in NHL goal scoring.
Pittsburgh Penguins at New York Rangers
It would be a slow start to the game at Madison Square Garden but a nail biter none-the-less.
The first goal of the night would come nearly thirteen minutes into the second period when a penalty to Rangers Ryan McDonagh would lead to a power play goal from Chris Kunitz. Minutes later Carl Hagelin would tie the game with a backhanded shot past Marc-Andre Fleury.
With a tie game to start the third period back-to-back goals from the Penguins early in the period would see the Rangers fall to a 3-1 deficit before Mats Zucarello would bring the Rangers within one just over midway thru the third.
A late penalty to Penguins Matt Niskanen for hi-sticking Carl Hagelin would lead to a power play goal from Derick Brassard to tie the game with just under two minutes left in regulation.
A five round shootout would be needed to decide a winner in the Metropolitan Division match up. Rangers Mats Zuccarello, Rick Nash and Brad Richards would be three of the five that were stonewalled by Fleury. Henrik Lundqvist would stop Jussi Jokinen, Sidney Crosby, Chris Kunitz and Pascal Dupuis before Brandon Sutter would finally get one past the Rangers netminder and give Pittsburgh the extra point.
”We battled hard, came back, and Hank gave us a good chance of winning. We didn’t come through today and it’s a disappointing feeling, but at least we got a point. We were down 3-1 there, so it’s a good comeback,” Rangers Mats Zuccarello on the shootout loss to Penguins.
