More Late Night CBA Talk

12/05/2012 at 10:44pm EST

I've started a new post due to a problem with the twitter embedding which will be corrected late.

Sorry, but this is more important.

So when more information is available, you will find it here.

added 11:02pm, via Tom Gulitti tweet,

The sides are still in different rooms right now. Players are still hanging around, though, and it's possible owners will return later.

added 11:05pm, Dan Rosen tweets,

After a long break a few owners just came down to meet with players again. Steve Fehr said earlier he wasn't sure if they were done tonight.

added 11:11pm, Numerous reports are the meeting is back in session.

added 11:17pm, Steve Fehr brings out pizza for media, media delighted.

added 11:33pm, Owners have left the meeting again. Yes it is a slow process but a good sign they continue to talk.

added 11:46pm, Ansar Khan tweets,

Player: "Process painfully slow. Deal isn't imminent. Still hurdles to climb but made some strides in some major areas. Will know more tomm.

added 11:51pm, Michael Russo informs us via twitter,

I'm hearing positivity from both sides of the aisle the last few minutes, so good news is both sides are still trying hard to get 'er done

added 12:17am on 12/6/12, The owners have left the room again.

added 12:31am, Bob McKenzie tweets.

Multiple people with some sense of what's going on will only say process is at "critical" juncture or "serious" phase.

McKenzie also stated only 3 owners in the room and some players have left too.

added 12:45am, Craig Custance informs us via twitter,

Talks toward a deal described to me this way: Close but precarious. Sums it up very succinctly.

added 12:53am, Elliotte Friedman tweets,

Hainsey: series of meetings today candid discussion plan on meeting tomorrow

And yes, the meeting is over for the night.

added 1:32 AM: Michael Grange tweets:

And Tom Gulitti tweets:

added 1:48 AM: John Shannon tweets:

Leagued proposed increasing "make whole" provision to 300 Million Dollars.

League proposed that UFA and Arbitration rules stayed same as last CBA...27 and 4 Years Pro.

League would not budge on Contract Term or Variance... 5 Years... 5%.

There would an exception for signing your own Free Agent...7 Year Contracts.

League proposed new CBA as a 10 Year Deal.

added 1:59 AM: Aaron Ward tweets:

CBA,indication NHL offer to increase the 'Make Whole' in exchange for greater concessions in area of player contracting. #TSN

Devil is in the Details in that it appears it still does not honor actual full value of existing contracts. #TSN

added 2:19 AM: Bob McKenzie tweets:

What the NHLPA will like about NHL offer: status quo on UFA and salary arbitration.

What NHLPA may not like about NHL proposal: $300M Make Whole, up from $211M offer, which more or less splits difference on NHLPA ask $393M

What NHLPA definitely won't like about NHL offer: 5 year term limit on contracts (except 7 for own UFAs), 5% variance, 10 year term for CBA.

added 2:26 AM: One more, from the Canadian Press's Chris Johnston:

NHL's offer of $300 million in make whole payments -- thought to be the golden number -- is connected to other parts of the offer.

added 2:36 AM: A few more from Bob McKenzie:

Couple of other details emerging: NHL proposal for 10 year CBA term contains an opt-out clause after 8 years. So it could be an 8 year deal.

Of the $300M NHL proposed for Make Whole, $250M is Make Whole and $50M is for pension funding that would not come out of the players' share.

added 2:47 AM: Final updates, from Eliotte Friedman:

Twitter stream coming: that pension issue by mentioned by @TSNBobMcKenzie is a thorny one. Here's why: pension laws are different in US...

and Canada. US teams can pay approx $20,000 more than Canadians tax-free. So, it's an advantage if you're playing south of border...

because you are shielded from those taxes and Canadian teams making up the difference aren't protected from paying them.

That's our money already. Was warned today this would be a problem, now I see what it is.

Okay, enough for one night. Finish with: I see two sides trying hard to make a deal. It won't be easy, but we are on the road.
