from Jack Todd at the Montreal Gazette,
A few years back, the cries for Bergevin to sign Lecavalier would have been deafening. Even now, after several sub-par seasons for the big centreman, they’re still pretty shrill.
A week after Bergevin said publicly that free-agency wasn’t necessarily the way to build, he’s confronted with a free agent who would appear to be a perfect fit for a team with $9 million in cap space. And Bergevin wants his man — badly. Bergevin, Molson and head coach Michel Therrien met with Lecavalier Saturday in an attempt to persuade the 33-year-old to come home.
Despite the otherworldly pressure in Montreal, you would think it would make sense for Lecavalier. With more than $30 million coming his way in the buyout, money should not be the definitive factor. A chance to perform in front of the home folks, for Lecavalier and wife Caroline to raise their children at least partly in French, to be that star French-Canadian skater the Canadiens have sought since Guy Lafleur left — surely it all fits?
