Monday Morning Notes

04/20/2015 at 8:30am EDT

from Larry Brooks of the New York Post,

- Is this a good time to remind everyone that the Capitals have won two of their past six series as the higher seed going back to 2009 with a group that included Ovechkin, Mike Green, Nicklas Backstrom, Brooks Laich, Jay Beagle and Eric Fehr and was joined a year later by John Carlson, Karl Alzner, Jason Chimera and Marcus Johansson?

You know, kind of the core.

- look at it this way. If Mr. Snider’s team hires John Tortorella to replace Craig Berube behind the bench, Vinny Lecavalier would get 25 minutes a night.

He’d have to, seeing as how Claude Giroux and Jakub Voracek would probably both be down with broken ankles from blocking shots.

HIGH FIVE
Chicago forwards Marian Hossa (2-4—6) and Michal Handzus (2-3—5) both extended their point streaks to five games. For Hossa, the five-game streak matches the longest of his postseason career (also accomplished in 2002 as a member of the Senators). For Handzus, who was acquired by the Blackhawks just prior to the 2013 Trade Deadline, the five-game stretch is the longest of his playoff career.

QUICK END
Los Angeles goaltender Jonathan Quick was pulled midway through the second period after allowing four goals on 17 shots. He had not been pulled from a game (regular season or playoffs) since March 14 at San Jose, a stretch of 30 consecutive starts. Quick had not been pulled from a postseason game since April 23, 2010, at Vancouver, a stretch of 41 straight playoff starts.

STREAKS SNAPPED
Sunday’s game marked the end of two record streaks by the Kings: the team’s 34-game postseason stretch of not allowing more than three goals and Jonathan Quick’s individual record of the same number. The team mark was seven games longer than previous record of 27, set by Detroit from 2002 to 2006. Quick’s individual streak was six starts longer than the old record of 28, set by Montreal’s Patrick Roy from 1992 to 1994. The last time the Kings or Quick allowed more than three goals in a playoff game was April 25, 2011, when Los Angeles lost, 4 3, in overtime to San Jose in Game 6 of the Western Conference Quarterfinals. TWOS AND ONES
Prior to Sunday, each of Los Angeles’ last seven postseason defeats (dating to last year) was by a 2-1 margin.

DID YOU KNOW?
The Blackhawks (8-1) and Kings (7-0) have the most home victories in the 2013 Stanley Cup Playoffs. Neither team has more than two wins on the road this postseason (Chicago: 2-3, Los Angeles: 1-7).

LOOSE PUCKS
The Kings lost for the first time in the last two playoff years when scoring at least two goals (22-1) . . . The Blackhawks yielded a power-play goal on home ice for the first time this postseason (26-for-27, 96.3%) . . . The Kings hadn’t played back-to-back road playoff games since April 8 9, 1989, at Edmonton (lost both games) . . . Chicago rookie Brandon Saad (0-2—2) and Los Angeles rookie Tyler Toffoli (1-1—2) both recorded their first career multi-point playoff games . . . The Kings hadn’t trailed by more than two goals in a playoff game since April 21, 2011, versus the Sharks, a streak of 36 consecutive games.
