from Jim Matheson of the Edmonton Journal,
Jets general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff, one of the most patient guys in his line of work, can parcel off unrestricted free agents Devin Setoguchi, Olli Jokinen and Mark Stuart at the trade deadline, but teams aren’t calling about those guys. They’re more interested in Evander Kane and Blake Wheeler, who have long-term deals. Cheveldayoff may need to change a core player to shake things up.
Also from Matheson,
- The Philadelphia Flyers want to re-sign goalie Steve Mason, but for how much and how long? Mason’s playing very well, but he played lights out for the Columbus Blue Jackets, too, before hitting a rough patch and later becoming Sergei Bobrovsky’s backup. Does Philadelphia offer him a three-year deal at the same dough ($2.9-million salary-cap hit) he was making in Columbus before the Flyers signed him for $1.5 million for one year? There’s no sense going overboard on Mason. The Flyers already did that with Ilya Bryzgalov.
- Has anybody noticed that Alex Ovechkin has 31 goals and is minus-17 for the Capitals? There’s not nearly enough defensive responsibility there.
